Default Ancient Threads

If I want to come on here and read about people's thoughts about the ongoing RG rain delays, or some other current topic, why must it be on the 1000th page of a thread that was started all the way back when Bill Tilden was picking up hitchhikers? Can a thread be retired after a certain period of inactivity?

In full agreement!

Edit - you do realise they will probably merge this thread with one from 1998 saying the same thing?

It should give you some perspective on how unoriginal and boring your "new" thread is but of course it never does...

It's not an original thought in most cases.

What I hate most about the response from some posters to anyone posting anything on here is the attitude that if there was a similar thread posted, even in Sanskrit on papyrus scrolls, then you must search it out and respond there. The tennis fan's attention span may be only as long as a Slam fortnight, and if it is, so be it. If someone wants to post about Venus' bare butt, but since there was a contemporaneous thread about Suzanne Lenglen's shocking knee-length attire, or the Wimbledon body-suit, then you're out out luck.

I disagree. When I see an interesting thread title I want to read about current events, not something that happened years ago, and then have to search for the recent posts. Using the "see first unread" facility is no use if the thread is older than the time you joined, and you haven't read any of the first 452 pages!

Fed vs Sampras
Nadal greatest on clay
Hating on the rain
Poor RG crowd behaviour
Federer is Nadal's bitch
Bad scheduling

These are all continual themes.

Not a sentimental person obviously.

I love ancient threads, reading what people were thinking back in the old days. If the only point of posting here is to chat with people of the present then why not head over to facebook or join a chat thread?

It's extremely tedious to search for old material when the same topic is discussed in several threads. Complete utter nuisance new posters starting threads "Federer or Nadal, who is better?" thinking they're so original. It makes ongoing debates impossible to keep track of.

Agreed, all are continuing themes, but there are usually contemporaneous events or moments, which may in fact be part of some grand theme, but they are moments which can be commented upon, flare up, subside and then disappear. Sometimes when I'm on this site I'm reminded of going to the local library as a child, and asking the librarian a simple question and being shown the Dewey Decimal Card Catalogue and feeling overwhelmed because the catalogue was a foot taller than I was and I had no clue as to the first place to look.

In fairness, threads are closed once they reach 5,000 posts (330 pages). So in a way you've got your wish.

In 2004 this forum was a better place.

Rain thread is very practical Fumus and not going to change over time.
