I really don't know what to say about this draw.

On one hand he gets an in-form claycourter in Giraldo, and a top 3 seed in Djoko. OTOH, Giraldo is beatable, and Djokovic looks quite frankly mortal these days so don't count out an upset.

Very bad draw But there's always a good side, Kei will get used to the atmosphere of big tournaments after long break and the challengers. I know he'll do some damage on grass

as flyboy did point out though giraldo is incosistent which is something i didnt take into account before

something else that caught my attention in his match against isner was that when he got broken in the 3rd set he seemed to lose it completely.

so now if kei can keep it close and pressure giraldo's serve than he might have a chance to take it in 4 or 5

do you think kei could last 4 or 5 at this point?

Giraldo who? This is the first time i've even heard his name, guess haven't been able to watch a lot of tennis lately.

Well this is a GS expect a tough draw always. I hope Kei wins against him and play against Djokovic (i really believe Kei has a chance against him)

Just a question on Giraldo, he is in form because? Did he win any title this past few months? Who are the well-known players that he beat? Just curios though

Rafkei, here's Giraldo's results this year. So look for yourself.
http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/P...aldo.aspx?t=pa

Giraldo did destroy JCF in Rome, but JC was carrying a knee injury and couldn't run. But Giraldo has good wins over many other players, like Robredo, Kohlschreiber and B. Becker.
Above all, he qualified Miami, Rome and Madrid and reached the second round in the main draw. He improved his ranking from #107 at the year end to #55 this week, his career high.
The guy obviously likes clay but he's not a grinder. He's out and out aggressive player and hits the ball early. Kei's serve will be thoroughly attacked. I expect a lots of breaks in the match.

But Kei has always said he likes clay. He's not a RG junior doubles champion in 2006 for nothing.
But he's also said recently that clay is heavier on his arm. So the last thing he wants to avoid is recurrence of the injury. If he can last a round physically, I'm more than happy!
And if Kei can expose Giraldo's inconsistency, like misty said, he has a chance...!

It's really pity these two meet so early because both of them have potentials to cause an upset over more established players.

Got this from TennisTalk.com
http://www.tennistalk.com/en/blog/Ri..._draw_analysis

Djokovic’s quarter

This should probably be referred to as "Ferrer’s quarter" since David Ferrer is in scintillating form and has to be considered the favorite to reach the semifinals. In fact, while the seeds say that this quarterfinal should be Novak Djokovic vs. Andy Roddick, the smart clay-court money says that this quarterfinal will be Ferrer vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Ferrer-Ferrero, though, is far from a sure thing. This section is not as quite as wide open as the previous one, but it still presents a huge opportunity for some surprise breakout performances, as there are no dominant presences. Djokovic has well-documented breathing issues, Roddick has not played an ATP match since the Sony Ericsson Open, Ferrer is unproven at slams (only one career semifinal), and Ferrero has a knee injury. Juan Monaco, I’m looking at you….

Best First-Round Matchup — Kei Nishikori vs. Santiago Giraldo

Among all-unseeded matchups, this could be the best of the entire first round. Don’t be fooled by Nishikori’s No. 244 ranking. He is a former world No. 56 and—still just 20 years old—he is back from a chronic elbow injury. Back with a bang, I might add. The Japanese sensation has won two straight Challenger tournaments (losing just two total sets in the process), so he is riding a 10-match winning streak into Roland Garros.

Giraldo is also playing stellar tennis right now. The 55th-ranked Colombian, a force on clay, won a clay-court Challenger event last month, qualified for the Rome main draw and reached the third round, and qualified for the Madrid main draw before making it to the second round. This showdown is going to be a high-quality baseline slugfest. Will Nishikori be able to last four—or even five—hours?

I think it's an interesting start for Kei after I read some more about Giraldo, will be a great test for sure.

Just wish I can watch Kei's match somewhere

Default Re: Roland Garros 2010!

Nick is quite optimistic! Hope he's right.

http://nickstennispicks.com/

Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. Santiago Giraldo (COL)

Nishikori, an IMG Bollettieri student, comes into the French Open on a hot streak. He has won the last two Challenger tournaments he has played in (both on clay) and the elbow injury that hampered him for much of 2009 seems to be gone now. I look for his young Japanese star to find his way back into the top 50 very soon.

Giraldo is a 22-year old Colombian who is currently ranked a career high of #55 in the world. He won a Challenger on clay in Pereira in April, reached the fourth round (after qualifying) in Rome and qualified and reached the second round in Madrid. The last three years he has qualified for the French Open before falling in the first round, so I am sure he is looking to get past that point for the first time in his career.

Match-Up:

This is the first career meeting between Nishikori and Giraldo and promises to be interesting. Giraldo is a very good clay-courter who moves well and can change the pace with the best of them. Growing up on the clay in Colombia, he knows how to win on the surface and will be a dangerous opponent for Kei.

I’ve worked with Kei for many years now, and he is back to the person that we saw in 2008. He can sting and bite you from anywhere on the court and his “jump shots” from both sides are really fun to watch. His movement is simply incredible and that is what separates him from his opponents. This will be a fun match to watch, but the way Kei is playing now I have to give the edge to him.

Nick’s Pick – Nishikori in 4 sets
