3rd seed Hiroki Moriya (#321) upset top seed Tatsuma Ito (#121) 5-7 7-6 6-2 in the final of the All Japan National Championship today in Tokyo.
(Nishikori and Soeda did not participate)

Moriya, who is a year younger than Kei, has some very good returns and is not afraid of coming forward. He's a bit like poor man's Hewitt. Good court sense and point construction but lacks power. Ito edged the tight first set and was up a break in the second set but he managed to show his choking quality again.

I saw only the final on TV but this year's talking point was Shota Tagawa, who lost to Moriya in SF. Tagawa is a university student and unranked, but he beat the defending champion Yuichi Sugita (#192) in R3 and the up and coming 19-year-old Yasutaka Uchiyama (#479) in QF.
Another promising teenager, Kaichi Uchida, lost 1 and 2 to Ito in R2. Ito beat veterans Takao Suzuki and Toshihide Matsui in QF and SF, respectively.

Sugita played an epic match against a top 10 player, lost this battle but I wish him the best of luck for 2012 because he displayed his game with style today

Ans Soeda defeated Wawrinka to reach the SF, well done. Overall it's a great first week for the Japanese guns.

I was thinking of Ze Zhang...but he's already inside top 200

Based on recent performance, maybe Di Wu?

In my opinion, Wu Di is more talented than Moriya and Zhang Ze. Obviously talent is not everything in tennis, but if he keeps working hard, I see Wu getting to top-100 next year without any doubt. He was ranked around 500 few months ago and even Hewitt was surprised to see he was ranked so low when they faced each other at Hopman Cup. It's a pity he wasn't ranked high enough when entry list came out to play USO qualies
I think Wu will be the next male Chinese tennis star. Hopefully ZZ can reach the top-100 some day as well.

Moriya is a good player and should reach top-200 soon, but in the last four months, he's only won two matches in a row once (at An-Ning challenger). He was having a rough patch, but with not much to defend until the end of the year, he should get there with two or three good results at challenger level.

Hiroki Moriya def. Robin Hasse in Bangkok, and ATP 250 event!
He won all 3 quallie matches in straights and I think this is his debut in to 2nd round of an ATP level tournament.

He's sitting at 204 now, his best ranking and should be in the top 200 very soon.

That's great for Moriya, hope he can finish the season like this or better.

I love the Asian swing, but the lack of time difference to most Asian countries will mean I'd miss the matches cause of work. I hope they have night matches especially when Kei's playing.

Sorry James, I don't know much about Taro Daniel, I've only read about him here on MTF.
