@ har-tru

it's not like germans aren't corrupt. there's a lot of corruption everywhere around me. it seems like the scope is different though, compared to greece or italy. societies virtually free of corruption may only be found up north, sweden, norway, iceland etc.

@ echoes: again, i want the euro to dissolve for the sake of everyone. the current situation hurts basically every nation within the emu, be it via trillions of bailout liabilities (growing by the day) likely never to be repaid (germany, netherland, finland, austria) or via crushing debts (greece, italy, spain, portugal). creating a monetary union was a nice experiment, but it evidently failed. i'd love t see germany being voted out of the emu by greece and the likes. that way we're leaving the whole mess in france's lap - and berlin doesn't even look like bailing on its "allies".

someone quote jolangago pls, i wanna see what kind of bullshit he's come up this time.

seems like i'm on the same page es gago. i can't wait for the euro to be put to rest either. the one country that will go bankrupt as the euro collapses virtually over night will be france though, not germany. in the long run there will only be benefactors anyways.

what i would like even more to happen is a rapid devaluation of the euro, which would inevitably kill the swiss national bank due to its currency peg/manipulation scheme.

Switzerland should just join the Euro. Trying to play the same game as Denmark, the small EMU nation stubbornly keeping its own bank notes.

believe me, if there was a party openly proposing an exit out of the emu i'd vote for it. many people would. but there isn't.

by kicking germany out i was referring to the european council. i think delegates have a certain amount of power. if they were to unilaterally vote for germany to be excluded from further actions, berlin would need to act accordingly. so once more, i urge europeans to pressure their representatives: kick out merkel!

Yes but don't concentrate on Germany. You miss the overall.

When you see that Tim Geithner was attending the Ecofin summit in Warsaw and that Obama advocated for Euro and for maintaining in the Eurogroup during the last G8 summit, you can easily understand who is behind all this.

We now know from declassified documents from the State Department that the US was the driving force behind the ECSC and the EEC (forerunners of the EU). European leaders like Monnet, Schuman, De Gasperi and Spaak (the latter makes me ashamed of being a Belgian) were treated as State Dept. employees.

But we also know that they were the driving force behind the EMU and it started a long time back. A memo from the European Section of the State Dept. from June 1965 advised the vice-president of the EEC Robert Marjolin "to pursue monetary union by stealth" and recommended suppressing debate until the point at which "adoption of such proposals would become virtually inescapable".

The EU is a whole American building.

Only one leader understood that:

I should like to speak particularly about the objection to integration. People counter this by saying: "Why not merge the six states together into a single supranational entity? That would be very simple and practical". But such an entity is impossible to achieve in the absence in Europe today of a federator who has the necessary power, reputation and ability. Thus one has to fall back on a sort of hybrid arrangement under which the six states agree to submit to the decisions of a qualified majority. At the same time, although there are already six national Parliaments as well as the
European Parliament and, in addition the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe ... it would be necessary to elect over and above this, yet a further Parliament, described as European, which would lay down the law to the six states.

These are ideas that might appeal to certain minds but I entirely fail to see how they could be put into practice, even with six signatures at the foot of a document. Can we imagine France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg being prepared on a matter of importance to them in the national or international sphere, to do something that appeared wrong to them, merely because others had ordered them to do so? Would the peoples of France, of Germany, of Italy, of the Netherlands, of Belgium or of Luxembourg ever dream of submitting to laws passed by foreign parliamentarians if such laws ran counter to their deepest convictions? Clearly not. It is impossible nowadays for a foreign majority to impose their will on reluctant nations. It is true, perhaps, that in this 'integrated' Europe as it is called there might be no policy at all. This would simplify a great many things. Indeed, once there was no France, no Europe; once there was no policy - since one could not be imposed on each of the six states, attempts to formulate a policy would cease. But then, perhaps, these peoples would follow in the wake of some outsider who had a policy. There would, perhaps, be a federator, but he would not be European. And Europe would not be an integrated Europe but something vaster by far and, I repeat, with a federator.

General Charles de Gaulle, Press Conference of May 15 1962.

Default Re: Financial clusterfuck in Europe

This deepening crisis angers me by the day.

Greece should never have been bailed out a second time at the end of last year. It was clear at that stage that the world leaders had simply kicked the can down the road, and we'd be faced by a worsening crisis months/years down the line. Over the last month, we have already reached that point.

To make matters worse, there is still this blind obsession to keeping Greece in the Eurozone. NO, NO, NO, NO and fucking NO! Let them go. They are not trustworthy enough to meet the demands asked of them; it is virtually impossible for them to repay all that debt anyway. It makes me livid that the Greek people might finally vote pro-austerity back in after months of messing around. Their borrowing costs have soared above 20%, adding heaps more to their debt pile. If they stay in the Euro, there will be massive uncertainty for months and years to come.

I hope that anti-austerity wins the election, and Greece defaults. The pain inflicted on all of us will be massive as the Euro will most likely come crashing down (Spain and Cyprus will surely topple, followed by Italy)...but this is all in the relative SHORT TERM. Countries can, and will, recover independently. Some obviously quicker than others.

Shorter-term pain for longterm gain is what the focus should be on. These politicians talk about trying to push for sustainable growth, yet they can't even understand this simple concept.

I'm fed up with their short-sightedness.
