Australia top seeds for 2013 draw

The ITF has announced the seeds for the two remaining zone group draws in next year's Davis Cup by BNP Paribas competition.
Australia will be seeded No. 1 for the 2013 Asia/Oceania Zone Group I draw with Finland the top team in Europe/Africa Zone Group II.

The draws are scheduled to take place at the ITF headquarters in London at 11:30am (10:30 GMT) on Tuesday 23 October.
Three of the four seeds in Asia/Oceania Zone Group I - Australia, Japan and Uzbekistan - competed in this year's World Group play-offs, with the fourth seed - India - having been relegated from the World Group just last year.

The draws for both these groups were unable to take place last month because the outcome of last weekend's ties between Chinese Taipei and New Zealand and Finland and Denmark affected the possible seeds.
The full seeds are listed below:

Asia/Oceania Zone Group I
1. Australia
2. Japan
3. Uzbekistan
4. India
Remaining nations: China P.R., Chinese Taipei, Indonesia and Korea Rep.

Patrick Rafter Won’t Comment on Tomic’s Davis Cup Standing

When asked yesterday whether struggling Aussie tennis player Bernard Tomic would remain part of the Davis Cup team for Australia next year, Davis Cup captain Patrick Rafter refused to comment.

Rafter said he hadn’t spoken with Tomic since an incident that occurred last week in Queensland. According to reports, police were called to the scene to respond to a complaint that Tomic was fighting with another man.

“Bernie’s having a tough time at the moment. He’s got to try and sort himself out. He knows it. When he’s ready to sort things out, he’ll have to sit down and have a good hard think and see where he goes from there,” Rafter said, speaking exclusively to Drop Shot Dispatch.

Reports out of Australia suggest that Tennis Australia is taking an active role in trying to get Tomic to split with his father as his coach during the offseason.

“They have to work that out themselves,” Rafter said. “That said, he has a lot of thinking to do with his father, and they have to work out what’s right if they want to go forward. We think we know, but it’s up to them.”

Rafter confirmed that Marinko Matosevic, Australia’s top-ranked player, would likely be participating in their next tie, after being benched for poor performance at a tie against South Korea.

“Marinko’s had his time on the sideline. He missed out on the last Davis Cup tie. He’ll be reinstated in the next one, provided he behaves himself. When guys are kicked out, it’s for a reason. They’ve got to man up, and he knows that. He’s very, very keen to get back into it, and it’s the best thing we could’ve done for his career, to give him the time on the sideline.”

Rafter also indicated support for efforts to revamp the Davis Cup format to make it more appealing to tennis fans.

“I think something needs to be done,” Rafter said. “It’s not what it used to be 15 years ago. When the guys are playing in the finals, they are getting very good turnout. Still, to me, it’s got a different feel to it from when I played. Whatever it is, I don’t know what the answer is, but the players have got to sit down and figure out what’s the best to get the guys all playing, because you want the best guys in the world playing.”

Is he fucking for real?

First of all, this looks to me like the Dokic saga all over again, but Tomic Sr isn't even beating Bernard. He's not a TA coach, but he's the one who single handedly brought Bernard into the TOP 30 and GS QF. Has ANY TA coach done that for ANY junior since Hewitt? Let him stay as his coach for fucks sake. If that's what Bernard is happiest with.. make TA coaches available, but the truth is that none of them have produced a junior like John Tomic has...

Also, another public dressing down of probably our hardest working player in Matosevic - who's capped off a career best year. Why is it even necessary? Be reasonable. It's crazy for Rafter to make out he's doing Matosevic a favour by making him a part of the team when he's our #1. When Hewitt's out, we have Matosevic (who has behavour problems and might be out of the team), Tomic (who have work ethic/motivation problems), and Ebden (who's out of TOP 100 now, but still has his spot).

The days of Davis Cup when Rafter played are gone. Forget about the team building bullshit, field your best team for the tie and be done with it. Tennis is an individual sport, choose your best, in form individuals and stay out of it. Does Rafter really think that 'culture' and 'attitude' are what's holding us back from doing better in Davis Cup? Hewitt, Tomic, Matosevic and Ebden is a fringe World group team at BEST. Reality check needed I think.

Australia is out of the world group for 5 years. Hewitt is not eternal, Matosevic around 27 years to build a team, too, very stupid. I would like to see in the game against Taipei players younger generation, Ebden, Kubler, Duckworth and Tomic.

Why? Why would you do that?

Tennis is an individual sport. Our best individuals right now are 1) Hewitt 2) Matosevic 3) Tomic 4) Ebden / doubles specialist.

Worrying about 'building teams' is what has made this mess in the first place. Just lead with your best players and you'll get your best result possible.

Well, marking time on a couple of years in one place. Davis Cup is all the same kind of team, not individual.

I love MM but if that is true then it is basically attitude issues and Rafter is right in doing what he is doing. Not too hard to figure out who the player would be but who is your source and how does the story go without naming names? How confident are you that this 'story' is true and not a rumour like some which have spread before?

Pretty obvious who it is, being going on for a few years now. Professional tennis players have to put those sorts of things behind them and just focus on the job at hand.
