great insight, i think we are capable of beating any of these teams. im sure that the away advantage wouldn't play much of a role. our players can handle basically any conditions.

Brazil – Bellucci, Daniel, Melo, Soares – Home

South Africa – De Voest, Klaasen, Moodie, Van Der Merwe – Home

Probably be hoping for Kazakhstan, South Africa or Brazil. Brazil and Italy are good draws as Australia can play them on grass. Australia wouldn't mind drawing Belgium. Romania would be a difficult away draw with Hanescu capable of winning both ties and their doubles team isn’t too bad. Austria would be the one Australia will want to avoid although Colombia could turn into a horror draw if they get the homeground advantage which would most likely be played at very high altitude.
It certainly seems as if we have more good draws than bad draws. As long as we don't get Austria or maybe Belgium then I think we will win. If Lleyton doesn't play for some reason almost everyone of these ties is losable.

South Africa looks like the most advantageous tie to me, although they have a strong doubles combination. Ties to avoid are definitely Romania and Austria and I wouldn't underestimate Belgium either, they still have some class players who can turn it on over a weekend for DC. I just want a home tie in Sydney, it's been to long!

Australia is going to play Belgium for the spot back in the world group, im not sure if we decide so good luck hope its in Australia, if its on hardcourt could count in Lindahl or Tomic for that final spot. Good Luck boys hope we win real easily and show that we mean business.

Between Hewitt, Luczak and our doubles pairing I would be very surprised if we couldn’t get 3 home wins against Belgium. Hewitt has shown in his previous meetings that he has the measure of the Rochus Brothers and Malisse and the only time he played Darcis he thrashed him at the Aus Open. Will be interesting to see the surface they choose. Belgium look reasonably strong on all. If it were me I would lean towards the Hardcourt. If we go grass Luczak can’t play on it and we are left with Hewitt and Ball and one of them would have to play all three days (could use Tomic but it wouldn’t be worth the risk). If we go clay and Luczak or Hewitt get injured we have no one to turn to. But if we go to Hardcourts, Lleyton should win his two rubbers, the doubles shouldn’t be much of a problem and Luczak will be in with a huge chance of winning his two rubbers. Plus if one of them gets injured there are a number of players who could fill the void.

Replay of that 07 tie in Belgium where Vliegen played out of his skin to beat Rusty in 5 sets and I think it was Gooch's debut as well and Oli Rochus got over him as well. That tie was on clay and Vliegen has been injured and out of form over the past year and a half so I don't think he will play. I agree we should definitely play on hardcourt, we have more options that way. It will yet again be up to Lleyton to win his 2 ties and then the doubles as well. I don't know if its just me but I think this is a pretty hard tie, at least we got them at home.

Something else very interesting about this tie, Hewitt is currently one win away from tieing the record for the most total wins in Davis Cup for Australia. So it could come down the the fifth rubber with Hewitt playing to break the record, that would be amazing.

Expect this match to be played on Hard in Sydney, Hewitt at home, comfortable, and gives us every possible chance to advance (taking into Hewitt's good record at the Medibank International as well). As for the second singles spot Luczak's spot is a bit up in the air, he has a ridiculous amount of points to defend between now and September so Luczak's ranking could really be anywhere at that point. Perhaps if Tomic can have a good American summer then maybe they will pick him. Either way I expect Australia to win the tie 3-2 with the third day still having live rubbers.

I don't think they will pick Pete, they have never showed that much faith in him at this level and for this tie maybe they would be right in that. Gooch, Ball or Tomic will be the 2nd player in my opinion and I reckon it will come down to a live 4th rubber with Hewitt securing it for us. I'd love for it to be played in Sydney.

I think it would be a good bet that the thought of playing Ball with his huge kick serve would be firmly in the mind of Fitzy when your facing a team with the Rochus brothers and Darcis.

Silly to predicting who gets the 2nd singles spot now, there's so much tennis to be played, and so much tennis for Lleyton to get injured again. It's a winnable tie for us but boy does Lleyton ened to be fit and raring to go. Tie should be on hard, no advantage putting it on grass or clay so just stick with the hard stuff.

Well grass is by far Lleyton best surface in my opinion. I'm positive he would win both of his singles rubbers if they opted for grass. I still don't know how good Ball or Luczak are on grass, but I would definitely give Ball the benifit of the doubt on hard court. They most certainly won't play on clay as the last time these two teams met, Belgium won on a very slow indoor clay court. I don't really trust Guccione at this level as he is very erratic and I don't think Tomic has enough experience at the moment to select him. However, there is alot of tennis to be played before then and obviously you have to look at who is in the best form at the time of the tie and obviously there is the chance of one or more of our guys suffering from an injury.

Aussies eye grass court in Davis Cup
DARREN WALTON
May 12, 2010
AAP

Just like the glory days, Australia will likely opt for a grass court for their Davis Cup World Group playoff against Belgium.

Australian captain John Fitzgerald breathed a huge sigh of relief after finally receiving some luck in the draw for the September playoffs, getting the home court advantage rather than another dreaded assignment in Europe or South America.

Fitzgerald's team will be striving to return to the elite 16-nation World Group for the first time since 2007 when, ironically, Belgium upset Australia 3-2 in their first-round tie in Liege.

Fitzgerald said while revenge wouldn't be Australia's motivation, he vowed to make life as difficult as possible for Belgium, who used a slow indoor claycourt surface for the two countries' most recent encounter.

"I'm not a vindictive guy but I'm pleased that we're at home. It's going to make a good deal of difference," Fitzgerald told AAP.

"I don't think we'll play on clay. I would think it would be either hard court or probably grass.

"But we don't have to make that decision for quite a while, so we're going to go through the grasscourt season, see what they play like on it, see what our guys play like on it and make an educated decision.

"There's no rush."

Australia whitewashed Japan 5-0 on a portable clay court in Brisbane last weekend, but Fitzgerald said choosing from surfaces that Lleyton Hewitt had won his two grand slam titles on would be wiser against European opposition.

Like Australia with Hewitt and Peter Luczak, Belgium only have two players in the world's top 100 - 58th-ranked Olivier Rochus and No.80 Xavier Malisse.

Fitzgerald welcomed Australia's change of fortune at the draw ceremony in London.

His team had to contend with Novak Djokovic-led Serbia in Belgrade and then Fernando Gonzalez-inspired Chile on the red dirt of South America for their two most recent World Group playoffs.

Last year, Australia - 28 times Davis Cup champions - boycotted a scheduled playoff in India because of security concerns.

"It's certainly nice to have one at home," Fitzgerald said.

"We thought we were due for one, so it's a bit of a result for us.

"There's no guarantees, but at least we've got a winnable match that we'll prepare for and on our surface and at least it's in our own back yard.

"It's going to make a big difference."

In the other World Group playoffs, Columbia will host the top-seeded United States, Austria visit Israel, Sweden are home to Italy, India entertain Brazil, Switzerland travel to Kazakhstan, Ecuador host Romania and South Africa venture to Germany.

The playoffs will take place from September 17-19, the weekend after the US Open final.

Hopefully Chris Guccione is going to be in better form for the tie but seriously can't see him being picked. Obviously if its on clay Tomic wont be picked and Luczak will. On grass Tomic should be picked over Luczak and Ball will get in on any surface.

Also they should keep Hanley in for the dubs, good luck boys.
