Default 2014 December show down

Hey everyone,

So we are only about 4 weeks away for this years 2014 australian open wc play off!

Im guessing the top 8 seeds would look something like this:

#1 James Duckworth
#2 Thanasi Kokkinakis
#3 Jason Kubler (?) any news if he will give it a slog?
#4 Luke Saville
#5 John Millman
#6 JP Smith
#7 Alex Bolt
#8 Ben Mitchell

The rest of the field would be the likes of

Matt Reid
Jordan Thompson
Matt Ebden (?) not sure whats going on with him
Omark Jasika

and 4 others wonder who will be invited

Are they doing qualies this year or is that just an error on the site?

I'd be surprised if many of those mentioned actually play. If you look at last year not many players that would make AO qualifying cut actually took part in the wildcard playoff opting for rest or extra training.

Maybe they will but Id be surprised if Duckworth, Ebden and Kokkinakis play. If Millman wins a few games this week he might also sit it out and take his chances in January if he doesn't get a wildcard offer.

99% sure that you won't see Duckworth, Kokkinakis or Kubler at the playoff

No qualies, just a website error.

Just my thoughts but believe the field could look something like this

Saville
Millman
Smith
Bolt
Ebden
Reid
Mitchell
Thompson
Propoggia
O'Connell (if fit)
Barton (if fit)
Jasika
Mott (if fit)
Jones
Bourchier
Under 18s champion - Santillan or Polmans (the other to be a replacement for any injured)

Unlucky to miss out: -
Banes
Van Peperzeel
Whittington

Millman has confirmed that he will play.

Don't think James or Thanasi will play. Duckworth carrying a few niggles and will want to recuperate/train and Kokkinakis lined up to train with GOAT Federer in Dubai sometime over that period

Ebden may want to sneak a back door entry into the AO, against the best of the rest.

So maybe Millman will be top seed, with Saville, Smothh, Bolt, Mitchell (if fit) then Reid, Thompson, Jasika, perhaps Banes, Mott, even a bone thrown to Jones ?

Millman needs to beat Duckworth to have a chance at the number 1 seed. Saville still 1 point ahead and a much better draw. Beating Gong and Onozawa will counter the 15 he drops the week prior to the playoff.

Should be a hotly contested tournament though, even without Duckworth and Kokkinakis.

The players (and TA) may be waiting to see how they go this week before deciding whether to play. Tall order for Millman to win three in a row, but if he did pull it off, would jump ahead of Duckworth in the rankings...

Certainly would be impressive. Just needs to do a better job of defending them than Ebden did...

Yes it really doesn't do a player any good to get to the top 100 if they can't knock off top 100 players.

But Duckworth may yet cut him off here - probably feels he needs to given that Kubler, Saville and Millman could also potentially jump over him this week (though unlikely given they'd all need to win to do so). In any case, could well see some further shuffling of the back before the week is out!

You mean a chance to win the wildcard playoff? Guess it depends who else turns up to play. On the face of it Bolt, Smith and Saville look to be in better form (losses this week for the latter two notwithstanding).

And as for whether Millman has done enough without the need to take part in the playoff - you'd think so, but...

Not sure about Jones - TA selectors will think he is too old for where he is ranked, depsite him being injured this year.
Barton still seems to have injury problems.
I think that list is good but maybe add Van Pepepzeel and Banes/Whittington.
