Default AO R1: Joćo Sousa def. [WC]Jordan Thompson 6-4 7-6(5) 6-4

Should have been a much quicker win, but he still got the job done in str8's, so no complains.

Klizan next round is the favourite, but not impossible for Joćo to beat him. Match up factor favors the slovakian, though.

Agreed. Klizan and Sousa are kinda similar style players. Shotmakers. Strong FHs. That said, Klizan“s serve is a bit better than Sousa“s and his BH is better than Sousa“s. Not completely one-sided but Klizan is definitely a favorite there. He should be able to punish Sousa“s BH with his left-handed forehand cross.

I kinda like chokers. Tennis would be boring without them.

Sousa wasted too many chances, making the match looking closer than it should have been, but all in all yeah, Joćo Sousa was in control of the match almost all the time.

Strong FH

Anyway, good win to boost his confidence. Klizan will be too much, though.

Sousa is a shotmaker with a strong forehand? Really? Not saying that's wrong since I've not seen him play many times, but he's looked a million miles away from that whenever I have watched him.

Sousa isn't exactly a shotmaker, but how can someone deny his strong FH? I mean, surely he didn't got to top 35 in the world with his pathetic BH and average (at best) serve.

Also far from great net skills and not a good returner as well. Not to 1st serves at least.

He have to have a huge FH to get him where he was and is right now.

I think it's lovely your unconditional support for a countryman but that is just making you look clueless which I'm sure you aren't. Tennis is not just about having strong or weak shots.

I will tell you what are the biggest strenghts of Sousa's game that made his "success" in the ATP possible:
1. Great court coverage and movement
2. Good consistency in the exchanges
3. Excelent stamina

I'm not saying his forehand is shit, but it's surely not in the strong department. Just think a bit, why is Sousa doing well in fast courts (specially grass/indoor)? Simply because faster courts can compensate the lack of pace in his shots.
Same works for his miserable campaign in the clay season. Surely his game works for challengers, but on the ATP, his lack of pace, lack of topspin, on clay? He is just giving "butter" to his oponents. On clay they have all the time in the world to hit their shots.

Now another question. How many times Sousa won matches where he was being dominated for a set and a half? Even saving match points in the process? That KL final is just one good example. In tennis, as you are getting tired your shots lose pace and your movement gets weakened. There's where Sousa's great stamina comes into play - his oponents start to get tired, their shots are not penetrating the court so much and the match turns itself into a physical battle where Sousa usually wins.

So, please stop with that strong FH BS. I'm happy about what he's doing for Portugal but that's just it. There's no need to stop using our heads because of nationalism. Lets face it, Sousa is just a Portuguese version of Granollers...

This will be considered in 2 weeks probably the worst match of this Aus Open edition. Help. Sousa played so poorly, nowhere near to what he showed up at Auckland vs Steve Johnson. But Thompson was even worst. Thompson playing what he knows would have won this match.

I think Sousa has one of the 10 best forehands in the game right now. Problem is, he also has probably both one of the 10 worst serves and backhands in the top 100.

I agree with this. Probably not the 10 best forehands, but something around 15/20
