Default Best US player ranked 24th

Hi there!
In the new released ranking Isner is the best US player ranked as 24th. I´ve been following pro mens tennis for almost 30 years and I´d never seen United States with a best player ranked so low.
I´m quite sure that it never happened in the Open Era but I´m not sure before. Does anyone remember if there was an even worse period of US players ranked so low or if this is the worst period of all times since there´s a world ranking?
Cheers!
Fran

No, this is a Open Era first time. Soon, the US will have no Top 30 player at all.

Well isner is not much of a us number 1, too many limitations. 1 of the younger players needs to step up. Johnson, sock, harrison whovever.

Default Re: Best US player ranked 24th

I remember the times of Connors and Mc Enroe, even the upcoming ones of Agassi and Sampras to only mention these leyends. Not only them but there were a large numbers of players ranked in the top 10 that not everybody paid to much attention if they were not able to be number one or win big things like Jimmy Arias, Aaron Krickstein, Jay Berger, Derrick Rostagno etc... And not to mention women tennis.

Even smaller tournaments used to be more important than the present ones just like Stratton Mountain, La Quinta or New Haven (despite of present US players level it´s still remarkable the amount of tournaments around US on these days and by far Indian Wells is one of my favourite MS).

The big differences that I see on these days than with past tennis is that today is more competitive on the lower leagues and younger players find it harder to jump to the top 50 (read Challenger and Future events) not to mention that tennis except of certain players is almost all the same (loads of similar baseliners) and surfaces doesn´t make a difference as they used to do in the past. I guess that didn´t help countries like US or Australia to make a difference as they did in the past.

I reckon US will have to do the same as Australia is doing to focus on how the tour and tennis is like on these days as it´s really difficult to produce different stereotypes of players as you used to have before.

On these present days I can see players like Donaldson or the upcomings like Kozlov, Mmoh or Tiafoe that can make a difference but it´s quite soon yet. Looks pretty much like a transicion period for US tennis.

Things go in cycles look at Australia, looked really bleak for them for a couple of years, now they have 2 maybe 3 (if you count Tomic) of the biggest prospects for the next 10 years.

You are right. I agree with you there. And I think Australian players made a huge change on their former traditional way of playing and adapted to modern tennis (Kokkinakis, Tomic and Kyrgios).

Yeah, it's been discussed to death. We're in a transitional era of USA tennis.

Well, yes and no. Not counting Lendl it was 34 years between Trabert in 1955 and Chang in 1989, and 42 years from the start when Budge won in the 30s. It's only been 15 years since Agassi won.

In the Australian Open, there was a longer gap when Budge won in the 30s. Same with Wimbledon with Tilden in the 20s.

That leaves the US open with the longest gap of 13 years between American champions from Trabert to Ashe. We're on 11 so far.

It's only going to get longer if Kozlov and Tiafoe flop, with Kozlov as my biggest hope for american tennis. Untill then, I think Johnson is a hard worker and can reach TOP20 at one point.
Isner should look at Karlovic, his huge serve should guarantee him a TOP20 place.

Coric will not win a single title in the next five years. Not even a 250.

Coric made it via wildcards - to Basel for example, Dzumhur had to reach it by hard work, on qualies, challengers.

USA shouldn't be worried, they have many promising juniors, not just one.

Tiafoe
Kozlov
Donaldson
Mmoh

To name a few.

It's foreshadowing the fall of the entire United States.

He has a lot of pace on his forehand and a nice looking DH backhand but has no consistency which is probably the main reason he's still not near the TOP100.

I wouldn't mind if he proves me wrong, but I honestly doubt it.
