Back to square one and to the MRI center. Dubai had already been tough for the joint, and then the relapse against Starace in Sunrise. He's worried, says "it doesn't look good because it's exactly the same pain..." The Gasquet match is the only one he will have played without pain. "See you in Wimbledon now", he says with a forced smile, anticipating another break, but not really knowing how he can sort out the problem. Surgery? "But there's nothing to operate!" See another specialist? "I can feel myself it's an inflammation when I touch the patella..." So there's nothing he can do? "There's something we haven't found out yet: what does trigger this 'thing' which causes so much pain?"

And the opinion of a doc, it's the former doc of a French soccer club who is now working for L'Equipe, but I'm not sure how well he knows Gilles' problem:
Priority to the healing
Surgery would be an option, but it's not necessary. All the more since it means he would miss the entire season to heal up properly. He's ready to stop, just not too long... But the time to let the knee heal up can't be cut down: for a tendon, it takes 4-6 weeks of rest and treatments. Then they have to find out the reason too: why did the sinew crack? Something wrong with his pelvis, his posture, his feet, etc.? People tend to mix up things and to think that as soon as the pain disappears, it's healed up. And if they resume the training too early then, it's back to square one.

He did pretty well last year in Wimby though, despite the knee. I still watched that R3 match against Hanescu once in awhile. He was on fire on that match.

Yeah that was a great match

I just feel it would be wasted effort to get ready for a 2 tourney grass season, and he would have to come back probably too soon He needs to give himself enough time to properly recover

I thought you meant he's no good on grass . But I see what you mean now.

Thanks for the update Fran.

for everyone.

I find clay season boring enough as it is. Now, no Gillou I guess I'll just be working on some "tasks" for Fran in Munich. I'm sure I can come up with some Chiudinelli questions. Maybe even one regarding clothing

Gerne! I'm not sure I will be able to see a lot of matches because it seems we'll have to be back in Berlin on Tuesday already, but I'll be there during the first week-end and on Monday, so I'll be glad to spy on Chiudi & Co.

He said the thing with Wimbledon only in jest anyway, but that's really the least he should do, I wouldn't mind if he preferred to skip the grass season - no point playing Wimbledon without a couple of preparatory events on grass and it means he would be back in 2 months already (Halle/Queen's start on the 7th of June already).

I'm reading L'Equipe of Sunday only now, they already had a few lines about his injury, but nothing really new, except that it happened in the 3rd game of the match when Zeballos caught him on the wrong foot (so there was a "mechanical" cause). Tulasne assumes he kept playing because he was hoping it would get better, but obviously he was not able to play. And Tulasne says that there had been a "warning sign" against Starace in Sunrise, but that Gilles was fine afterwards (so apparently he didn't decide to enter Miami knowing he would play on one leg, I was starting to wonder if he's completely crazy – he clearly said after the 3rd round in Sunrise that his knee was really painful, though, the quote makes it sound a bit more harmless than it looked like):
Quote:

Thanks Fran.

I already determined that he is insane and has an incredibly high tolerance for pain.
He probably didn't enter Miami already knew he'd be playing on one-leg. But since he did say he will stop when he felt pain and he felt pain before Miami, so if he has any sense of being precautious. Then 3rd game of the match and he carried on, if it's only 3 games away to the end of the match I can understand, but 3rd game of the match and he had to play 14 more? Really pointless to keep playing besides making matter worse. Oh well, that's Gilles.

I actually will like to see that he makes a commitment to get better and not rush back. If he say he will skip RG and Wimby, I think I will be delighted.

Danke This will help me to coast right on through the clay Chiudi & Co. sounds like a grand establishment

Me too I'm hoping he does this whole recovery thing with the same amount of fire that he does everything else. It's counter-intuitive in a way, but should have a huge payoff.

I will reserve judgement. I was sooooooo looking forward to seeing him play at Wimbledon and when he is aggressive his flat game really suits the grass but obviously if he is not ready to come back then he should indeed just wait til the HC season.
