Santiago QF: Gonzalez def. Granollers 7-6(8) 7-6(9)
muggy muggy muggy match from both, too many service breaks and in the second set TB Gonzo was miles ahead and somehow let himself go to 9-9

Gonzo was up 6-1 in the 2nd set TB. The match wasn't pretty, but at least he won.

Santiago QF: Fernando González d. Marcel Granollers 7-6 (8), 7-6 (9)
Gonzo wasn't too precise at times in the match and Marcel was a bit inconsistent with his groundstrokes but still I was pleasently surprised by him. He does go to the net a lot and seems to be an excellent volleyer which is an oddity indeed for a Spanish clay courter. Overall, at the net is where Marcel feels most comfortable by far.
In both sets Marcel was a break up 3-1 but wasn't able to maintain it. His serve is not much of a strong weapon. I was actually rooting for him in the second set tiebreak after he rallied back from 1-6 winning 6 points in a row to a have set point on Gonzo's serve! But Gonzo served too well from that moment on.
Anyhow, it should be a close SF against Bellucci for Gonzo.

Gonzo will have a much harder time against Bellucci

If if gets much harder for Gonzo than it was tonight then he'll probably end up losing.
I wouldn't mind... For some reason I'm starting to dislike Gonzo a bit. Dunno why... And Bellucci is a talented guy. He should end the year within top 20 and like I said in another thread, I woudln't be surprised if he gets to the top 10 in the future.
Anyhow, I got the feeling that Granollers was a bad matchup for Gonzo. I think his game will fare better against a "normal" talented 00s player like Thomaz and I expect a great match.

How can people tolerate watching a brainless slogger like Forehando Goonzales mugging around an entire match?

Come on GOAT! This match proved all that needs to be proven, the RG 2009 semi finalist could only win in tiebreaks against Marcel!
Mark my words, 2010 Roland Garros, this guy will beat Rafael Nudall. He has the Spannish nuts to stand up to Nudall.

Now since Nadal won many of his titles against a clownish Federer, it means Nadal's victories are also cheapened.
And finally, since Nole beat a clownish Nadal in many of his slam victories, his achievements are further cheapened.
Conclusion: everyone is a clown, playing in a neverending clown era.

Re: Santiago QF: Gonzalez def. Granollers 7-6(8) 7-6(9)
Watched the first set and went to sleep. I thought it was hilarious already but the full scoreline and the course of events in the second make it all the funnier. Marcel couldn't hit a high forehand volley or a solid cleanly hit smash to save his life. Low volleys were pretty good. Gonzo was irritated and erratic from the word go and was smiling ironically at his camp (at himself? for me it was more like "how can this Granollers mug produce such shots?"). Marcel is almost in my signature now.

Marcel. Great fight, but couldn't pull of the upset. So happy to see him back in form though

Re: Santiago QF: Fernando González d. Marcel Granollers 7-6 (8), 7-6 (9)
Granollers has been showing signs of major improvement lately - he really should have beaten Cilic, and then taking out Soderling. Needs to add consistency, string together a few decent performances, and he'll be top30 pretty quick.
The volleying thing is nothing new btw, he does that on grass and indoors also. Probably came out today because he didn't fancy his back court chances vs Gonzo.
