Oh yeah, women would definitely have an advantage in engineering fields. Out of curiosity though...why a professorship for engineering? It's not a common one for academic pursuits, is it?

Well, scratch that, there is a ton of funding for it.

To Tennizen: Didn't you have an indian flag before? And why the old afghan one...political statement .

Well that and the garbage strikes, means it stinks as well. At the same time there are rules in theory, yes driving in Italy does require nerves of steel.

I wouldn't mind if some people fell down the gap, though that would make the services even later.

Nadal answered some questions in today's blog. Apparently Almagro has a video of Youzhny hitting himself on his head stored in his iphone
Well this was comedy plus. I haven't laughed at a match like this for a while.

Hewitt vs. Coria at DC in Sydney was hilarious. I was laughing at the shenanigans in the match and there were so many.

No actually. I like to know what flags each country has. So I decided to change my flag alphabetically each day MTF still shows the old one I guess

Btw what is your field?

lots of funding and interest especially when your research is also biology-related .

Researchers are bigger bandwagoners than people here on MTF. It was nano-tech before but now its being revamped.

Oh, ok, that makes sense. I'm just a lowly undergraduate student. The field will be medicine (academic) eventually.

Ah, forgot to quote Metis. Oh well, I still remember it so I'll respond anyway, although maybe not much to respond to. So...yeah, bioengineering has loads of money. And to tennizen, yes biology has loads of money. Well, that was easy.

But that actually brings up an interesting point. If you look historically at the way fields are represented in the media, you'll see an interesting correlation between media exposure and how lucrative the field is. So right now, the fields that bring in the most money are health-related (the pharmaceutical industry is the largest in the country...take that big oil!), so ALL the science news is about new medical (normally fake) advances. But then look 40 years ago...all the news was about engineering...rockets...cars...oooh!!!!!

Edit: In response to new post: I really hate how the public perceives of scientists as this great an noble profession. In reality, the whole thing is completely fad based. Look at stem cells...or string theory.

This is so true. If you are actually doing research, you realize how much of it is absolute nonsense. There is such a small percentage of really good work that is done. Mostly, you ask questions in such a manner that you get the answers you want

Edit: Goodnight all. I am leaving now

Well, I would say bio- and energy-related fields are the hot stuff at the moment. The way the public perceives scientists has a lot to do with the press and their tendency to sensationalize everything (familiar no?). The announced advances are not necessarily fake, sometimes it's just that it's too early to tell if they will work.

Why do you say that stem cells are a fad?

EDIT Ooops sorry, I confused the word fad with something else (fib)

Exactly, it's all politics, and a good bit of very sketchy business reltions. And absolutely, I don't know about engineering (is that your field?), but in medicine basically any in vitro work is complete bullshit. It's so funny to hear professors talk about how "it only works if you do this and that and that and that, so that's why it's hard to reproduce"...so in other words, you just do "that and that and that and that" until you get it to tell you what you want. Congratulations.
