The thing making that sort of "scandal" newsworthy was obviously the fact that this governor was such a crussador for "higher morals" which makes this story funny for the outsiders (even though I also feel sorry for his family).
If not, he could have given a Mitterand reply. When the press found out that he had a daughter from an extra-marital affair, his simple reaction was: "Et alors?"
I was/am not a big Mitterand fan but that reply was brilliant.

You forget that America is much more prude and hypocritical about sex than Europe, esp Southern Europe. Plus he clearly broke the law unlike some others as I understood, morals or not.
