Santiago 1R: Kubot def. Zeballos 3-6 7-5 6-3
Great win for Q-bot I didn't expect this, Zeballos looked like a South American specialist last year. Actually it would have been a routine 6-3 6-4 but Q-bot came back from 1:3 in the 2nd set - it's his first ATP win from a set and break down
At 5:4 Q-bot maybe wasted 7 setpoints (I'm not sure because I didn't see a game at 4:3 in that set) but didn't collapse.

Zeba is a machine against lesser guys, but seems a bit stuffed against top100. By ranking his best ever result seems to be beating Massu (Bogota last year).
Might be Santiago altitude makes it play a little quicker? Zeba can struggle for his timing when the groundies really come fast at him, and Kubot can really club the ball when in the mood.

Nice win Kubot Quarterfinal against Gonzo is possible and should be exciting

Why did Kubot choose to play this over Johannesburg? And come to it why Ferrer the other way around?

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.
The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

1. Kubot isn't a natural born s&v-er contrary to what some people think here because of recent good doubles results. He feels safe when courts are slow and can employ serve and volleying as only one of the tactics, it's a relatively new development in his game. He was never brilliant on grass, be it slow or fast.
2. Marach loves slows courts as well and is not too fond of fast hard or grass, at least he wasn't a few years ago.

I think he had had too weak ranking at the beginning of the season to play in Rotterdam without qualies therefore chose to play SA tour. Where would he go after Johannesburg? San Jose, later Memphis. It would be too tiresome.

last year in Jo'burg, Ferrer played out a close semifinal with Chardy but lost out 6-1 6-7(9) 6-7(4) after squandering 3 match points.

Hopefullly it'll give him extra confidence going into the next rounds and he can build on it. Maybe I have the wrong impression, but I've always felt Kubot was a bit of a choker.

Congrats for Łukasz. Score surprised me actually.
QF is doable. He should pass through Granollers in R16.

Top 60
Unfortunately there is quite a gap between these guys ranked 53-57 and Top50 (some 100 points). But who would have thought one year ago.....

Kubot was 3-1 up in the second, Zeballos broke back but lost the set anyhow.
Very tough one for Zeba. He had some chances to win this, but it was always one of the toughest draw for a seeded player. Too bad, better luck next week.
