well if u ask my opinion... i'd say over his career it's above 50% chance he will break sampras record... afterall he just needs 2 more weeks at no.1 to do so... however i'm in pessimistic mode now (and have updated the thread title to reflect that...) and if we are to talk about breaking the record before wimbledon 2010 i'd say less than 50% chance...

if u look at it objectively... i'd say that it's about 50% chance...

He now needs to win a match at Madrid and reach the RG final OR reach the Madrid final and the SF at RG. Nothing less will do, if of course Nadal wins Madrid and RG (which he does).

Wacky , What is your opinion about the last week ? Also , djokovic didn't qualify for the final at serbia open.
By the way are you going to update the numbers ?

opinion?? he can't even win mickey mouse titles or even make it into the finals... i'd say that at this rate... i'll see his GS semi streak come to the end at RG... no need nadal to beat him...

well i'm losing motivation to update this thread... but i'll update it nevertheless - once i get home... afterall it's just less than 2 months more b4 the thread can die off... or more likely just 1 month more once he lose no.1 after RG...

regards,
wacky

Let's face it: Roger IS NOT going to secure this record on his own merit. He's not making the finals of RG. If he is to get the #1 record his best hope is that Nadal somehow fails to win either Madrid or RG.

Chances of Roger making it on his own: 5-10%
Chances of Nadal not winning either of Madrid or RG: 10%

Overall chances of Roger staying at #1 after RG: 15-20%

That is good i think. Because Nadal hasn't won Madrid masters since 2005.
On the other hand Roger won more Madrid masters titles than nadal.
Nadal is not confident in madrid masters may be because of high altitude. Tournament is played 800 meters above sea level.

Madrid in it's current clay installment has only been played ONCE and that was last year.

Nadal has never won all three masters tournaments in the same year before but that's been because of scheduling. This year, after skipping Barcelona, Nadal has had a week of rest in between each clay tournament and besides, he was barely pushed in Monte Carlo and Rome - particularly not at MC where he hardly broke a sweat.

Nadal is winning Madrid barring injuries or freak occurences.
