Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
You are right. It is a very remarkable situation that a player currently holding 3 slams and a RU is at risk of losing his ranking to a player having basically no Slams results over the last 12 months (1260 points). That's his own fault. It's quite risky to be so heavily relying on a few tournaments for your ranking. An ill-timed injury or upset a he could drop.

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
True duong, it certainly appears as if Federer fans are now only relying on Nadal for the record. It's just the way the ranking works: counter-intuitive to many who consider it superficially.
In fact I hope Nadal will do well this clay season. I have a lot of respect for him, and also, Nadal winning a lot only enhances Federer's legacy and makes his clay losses against Nadal more respectable. :P

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
even w the ogre losing 500 pts fr w/drawing fr BCN, citing both knees, but mostly his R knee, it's actually to manage his schedule so that he can win the titles he wants: Roma, Madrid, RG, Queens, Wimbledon... but he knows he's getting close to regaining No. 2 fr Nole, who isn't playing this week and still has a lot to defend: Roma Finalist, Belgrade winner, Madrid SF
it will be tough for Rogi to defend Roma SF without previous clay matchplay (that lung infection really set him back from Dubai to the present) while the other players have been playing on clay for at least one tournament now, even players who haven't done much recently or are coming back fr injury, etc. (NOT rafita -- winning 6 MC in a row is expected; he is the overwhelming favorito every year in all clay tourneys, and yes, at RG this year)
so once Madrid starts, it will be Rogi who has the most points to defend... all the way to the end of Wimbledon
start praying now for Rogi to return and get the job done

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
btw, the reason rafita is the thread altho he has the most pts to defend until RG, is because it is HIS season right now and it's where he utterly dominates, as he has done since 05, nothing more, nothing less... of course he was going to win MC again... logical (and he defies the laws of nature and the odds)

I can't believe that Federer is probably going to miss out on the record now. I would never have thought it.

Not really. Except for 2 weeks in Australia, he has been playing like a semi-retired player since the USO 2009.

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
I have gone from being 95% sure that he would beat the record, to thinking that there's about a 15% chance now. That's about the probability of Nadal getting injured, because noone is beating Nadal on clay this season if he's fit.

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
why all the gloom and doom...? i still think federer still has 50/50 (or maybe slightly better) chance of taking the record... his clay performance has generally been good... and nadal might not necessary grab everything in sight... it seems kinda of a "trend" nowadays when someone is playing well... only to lose momentum later... and one who is not playing so good can only get better....
regards.

Once upon a time players like Gulbis couldn't hit through him on hard court, now they are doing it on clay.

Have you actually watched today's match? Or any of Rafa's, lately?
That record will now remain Sampras's, pretty sure of that.

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
Yep, time to change the thread title to the "Countdown to losing the #1 ranking thread" because with the way Roger's been playing there's not a great chance he's actually going to hold on to the #1 ranking, but it's not like he's actually been playing like a #1 player much

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
The tragic thing is that Federer, as far as I remember, has improved his clay results every year from 2003 to 2009. Each year has been better than the one before in terms of clay points scored. However 2010 could well become his worst on clay since at least 2004.
After he won RG last year I sort of feared that he would stop caring about his clay game.

Re: The countdown to most #1 record thread
6-7, 6-7, 5-7 in the last three defeats... well, he has won a lot of those tight matches in the past, now he loses them a bit more. unfortunately, but i guess that comes with age. he'll be fine for RG, I'm sure.
