Default Federer has had back problems since 2003?

http://www.lematin.ch/actu/suisse/ro...mpte-pc-143403 (french article)

All Swiss men are required to perform military services but in 2003 Federer was deemed unfit by the military and did not need to participate because he had a bad back. Don't you have to be even fitter in Tennis? It doesnt make sense.

I find it ironic, because if he HAD participated. he wouldnt have defeated Sampras in Wimbledon and become the GOAT

Well I can say something from the Finnish perspective, since we have mandatory military service as well. Most top athletes don't have to participate if they really don't want to, they're let off the hook. Some guys are too nice and diligent not to go though, guess that's a Finnish thing . For example Nieminen went to the army.

Though it's still not the same, we have a special "Sport's corps" where athletes go and are able to get a lot of vacation... Nieminen hardly spent any time in the army when he was there. Quite different from my coastal infantry training

Federer is not the first athlete to have dodged the draft with a little help from doctors.

I kinda doubt Switzerland would have been better served with one extra private.

You don't even need to be an athlete for that. If you don't want to serve and are willing to pay the compensation it's easy.

Mandatory army service has to be the most stupid thing around here, at least in countries who aren't likely to participate in any large-scale war in a conceivable future.

Regular soldiers are little more than cannon fodder for professionals. So for a civilized country, regular army is pretty much pointless. I did my best not to waste almost a year doing that shit, as I find watching the paint dry more purposeful than learning how to use firearms and whatnot. Because even if I did learn how to use firearms, I probably wouldn't have the courage to actually go and fight in any serious war, so they'd have to shoot me as a deserter.

Anyway, I consider it a very wise decision from Roger, skipping the army like that. After all, wasn't Switzerland actually neutral in every war I can think of? So what's the use for them having a regular army? They've got money, it's a better protection than any kind of army, anyway.

Apemant: Switzerland has managed to stay neutral because of its defences... Area cowered by Alps and every man has a rifle in their home (if I understand correctly?). It would have been a tactical suicide in WW2 for instance to attack Switzerland.

Us Finns also have a sense of pride in our military service, since our grandfathers managed to defend against the Soviet's attack in the Winter War. Also, the geographical location of our country might give you some incentive as to why we have mandatory army

neutral means that we dont take sides in a war. but if you attack us we will shoot back. our army us only for defense.

if you really dont want to go yoz don't have to. they let me go with back problems too and i didnt even have them or complained about them. i just told them i dont want to go. they have common sense and dont waste valuable time of a pro athlethe.

Yeah but despite all your mandatory military training, Russia could stomp you like a bug in 5 seconds if it wanted to.

Don't piss of Putin cuz he's your daddyy.

Not denying that

But we'd give a helluva fight, or at least try

who can blame him that Mirka was overworking him for those babies, obviously sex was on call to time when Mirka wanted to fall pregnant.Notice that after the babies were born his back mysteriously healed, too much hanky panky to please Mirka.

Well I don't see why it's hard to believe.
How about letting big bone Mirka sit on your pole for a few years and see if your back doesn't start to hurt.

Heck, I still can't get over the fact Switzerland has mandatory army.

I bet he would have looked good in uniform.
