Ben lost to qualifier Adam El Mihdawy.
The transition from Futures events to Challengers is not easy, the main difference being the power and the new balls. The ITF rules of new balls every 9 and 13 games favours the lesser powered grinders, while on the Challenger circuit with new balls every 7 and 9 games (as in the ATP) gives the more powerful players an advantage, and the big servers especially are more dominant in the ATP/Challenger game.
Ben will have to adapt to the more powerful game.
Also, naturally due to the higher ranked event, the players are a better calibre as well.

Ben goes down in another Aussie future final. This time to James Lemke 6-1 4-6 6-3. Missed his chance to grab a spot in the top 300 but will have another chance next week in Darwin. He really only needs to reach the semis in Darwin and he'll get into the top 300. I'll be curious to see where Ben heads after this but I have a feeling he will just stay in Australia and play in the futures in WA and SA during October. You would presume he would want to defend his points in Bendigo so he will probably play the last two Aussie futures in Victoria as well.

Maybe he'll mix in a few Asian challengers along the way which would be good for him. Either way he seems to be playing well which you can't be unhappy about.

Through to the QFs with a 3 & 3 win in the second round. Plays the number 7th seed Uchiyama in the quarters and if he gets up he'll break into the top 300. In fact a win this week will see him overtake Duckworth in the rankings and become the number 2 '92 born Aussie again. Hopefully he wins and puts some pressure on Ducky to start playing again. Good luck Benny, this week could really set you up for a crack on the challenger tour next year.

Ben is through to the quarterfinals of the first WA future. With this win Ben has entered the top 300 at this current point in time but things may change before the points are added to his ranking. A win over Jose Statham in the QFs will make his position in the top 300 official. Ben is the number 1 seed this week and could really take advantage of his seeding this week. Realistically only 40 points shy of the top 250 from now and could probably reach it with a win and at least a runner up over the next two futures in WA.

I'd really like to see both Ben and James Duckworth finish the year in the top 250 to allow both a decent crack on the challenger level next year. It is a necessary step both will have to take next year and I'm sure Tennis Australia is pushing for it to happen. So as it currently stands from our 1992 class we have one player in the top 50 and two more in the top 300, I guess it isn't too bad but you wonder why the other age classes couldn't produce similar results.....

When a player has few points to defend it is easier to progress up the rankings than when having a full season of oints to defend. The 1989 year had a few players, Klein, Millman, Jones who progressed well at first but then could not consolidate (Klein, Millman) in the top 200. Jonesie is close, having been in the 200's the whole year. The 1990 and 1991 year have not done well - Matt Reid being the best performer (from memory).
Lack of opportunities from TA is part of the problem. When that group were teenagers wild cards were given to older players such as Alun Jones, Jo Sirianni, etc. Then TA changed to the "youth policy" and Tomic and Kubler benefitted. Millman has had a few WC's, whilst Jonesie has only ever had 1 WC into an ATP event, none into a Grand Slam, despite being a top 4 ITF Junior, in the Oz top 10 for four years and even chipped in with a silver medal in the CWG.
Hopefully the 1992 borns can step-up and remain in the top 200 next year.
