Mitchell is impressive in dealing with the No.6 seed, Denys Mochanov ranked 349, in straight sets, 62 64.
Ben's draw has opened up with the No. 1 seed replaced by LuckyLoser, but, should they both win their 2nd round encounters, may have an interesting encounter with fellow Queenslander Michael Look in the QF round.
Ben wins the cane toad battle, coming from a set down to beat Look 46 61 64, to advances to the semis.
Face No.3 seed now, Swede Michael Ryderstedt, currently ranked 302, but a better player than that with a high rank of 130, albeit 6 years ago.
If Ben wins that one he could take out the tournament, as only the No.8 seed is left on the other side of the draw.
Go win that damn thang...
Great result for Benny. He will now crack the top 400 next Monday. regardless of the final result. Runner up will move him to about 397 and a win will move him to around 383. I guess Duckworth's recent results on the European clay has inspired Benny, he wants that number 2 Aussie spot in the '92 boys back. He has got the number 2 Aussie spot back now but lets just hope that he can push through and win this final against the unseeded Spaniard.
I think this is good for Duckworth too because it will push him now to get a result either next week or the week after (whenever he returns) so he can overtake Benny again. These two pushing each other could very easily result in both playing challenger main draw within two or three months time. They are both just 50-60 points shy of the top 300 which will result in both playing challengers. With Bernard doing well in Wimbledon too it seems the '92 class of Aussies are going to give us a bright future.
Hopefully Kubler comes back soon and joins Duckworth/Mitchell on the challenger tour when/if they all make it. Although I have a feeling Kubler will quit tennis for good soon. Either way these last few weeks have been extremely positive for Aussie tennis and with the decline of Lleyton Hewitt it is desperately in need.
