Default Australians on the green stuff

Wimbly entry list is now out so thought this might be a good moment to start a thread for the next part of the season.

And on the draw, Marinko missed md (cut was 98), but is second alt, so will almost certainly make it in:

Agreed, looks like he may be asking for one for s Hertogenbosch as well, on the alts list for it.

Also notable that Mr Kubler is on the alts list for the 250s and 500s, so may be thinking of giving it a try (but doesn't seem to have signed up for the challengers, so not clear how serious he is about it).

For this grass season, only Tomic and Kyrgios have the ranking to get into main draw for any of the tour level events, and seem to have split them between them.

Pretty much everyone else is on the alts list for all of the 250s/500s though, so I guess we'll have to wait and see if they get in (Matosevic is close to md in at least one case, ditto Duckworth), get wild cards (ie Kokkinakis), play qualifying, or stick to the grass challengers.

At the moment their schedules basically look at follows:

week of 1 June:
RG week 2 - ?
Manchester challenger updated: Groth, Matosevic, Smith, Saville, Mitchell, Thompson; Qualifying: Bolt, Reid

week of 8 June (250s)
s' Hertogenbosch:
Stuttgart: Tomic, Kokkinakis
Surbiton challenger: Ebden, Kokkinakis, Smith

week of 15 June
Halle: Tomic Qualifying: Groth[/i]
Queens: Kyrgios, Hewitt (w/c) Qualifying: Kokkinakis, Duckworth, alt :Matosevic
Illkney challenger: Millman, Smith; alts: Ebden, Saville, Mitchell, Thompson, Bolt

week of 22 June
Nottingham: Kyrgios alts: Groth, Duckworth
Wimbledon qualies: tba

week of 29 June

Wimbledon md: Tomic, Kyrgios, Groth, Kokkinakis, Duckworth
2nd alt: Matosevic
???w/c Hewitt

Thanks yes - have updated they have both withdrawn unsurprisingly. I've also added qualies for Queens (Kokkinakis and Duckworth with Mosevic as first alt) and Halle (Groth).

Given that the grass season kicks off tomorrow, thought it might be worth posting their points on grass from last year - numbers are grass only, all points gained (ie as opposed to effect on ranking) excluding DC.

Kyrgios: 455 (360 Wimbledon)
Hewitt: 305 (250 from Newport)
Groth: 180 (90 Newport)
Matosevic: 145
Saville: 129
Tomic: 75
Duckworth: 50
Ebden: 30
Kokkinakis: 0

Let the games begin...

Yes you'd have to say it would be pretty surprising if the grass rankings this year look anything like last years at all (just as clay was a complete turnaround).

What's your punt on the order of the top three through the grass season though? Tomic to surge back up as he did in the hard season earlier this year (he led 675 to Kyrgios' 385 and the Kokk's 219? I'm thinking not myself, but...

My prediction is Tomic and Kok will rise to the occasion, and i really dont like Nick, so for me the more R1's he losses the better.

I hope Marinko.. gets a few wins or have no idea whats going to happen

I think we can hope and expect to see great results from Nick, Thanasi, Bernard and Sam. Sam surely must be favoured to get lots of lovely wins this year with his serve and improved court movement combined with more reliable groundstrokes. Luke Saville was showing a little form in Paris so I am hoping he comes good. Might take some motivation from his girlfriends good run in recent times.

I think Marinko's race is run.

Now Manchester begins time for me to make some bold predictions to assess in July: Includes top/worst performances + approximate ranking after Newport week.

Nick Kyrgios will make the semis in holland and go to the second week of Wimbledon, where he will be routined by a top seed.
End Ranking: 28

Bernard Tomic will have a very contrasting effort to his clay season. He will back this up with another 4th round at Wimbledon, and some great performances in Germany.
End Ranking: 21

Thanasi Kokkinakis will go deep in a grass challenger, and impress at his first Wimbledon appearance.
End Ranking: 45

Sam Groth will play well in challengers and surprise in a main draw, before being drawn against good seed early on in Wimbledon
End Ranking: 64

James Duckworth will be solid, but no super good results.
End Ranking: 77

Lleyton Hewitt will be disappointing overall but win a match at Wimbledon and Queens, as well as making Newport Semis.
End Ranking: ca.150

More predictions:
Marinko Matosevic will drop out of top 150
Luke Saville will go out of top 200
JP Smith will qualify for Wimbledon
Matt Ebden will continue his resurgence, breaking the top 150!

If he does that well, he will at least hold his current (live)ranking, which is around 25.

After last night I'm feeling a bit pessimistic though - high risk he will drop back badly rankings wise.

Yep agreed, though hope Thanasi actually ends up with a wc into one of the 250s, and wins it. I think he can.

I think that is incredibly optimistic. I think we should enjoy his series of last first round matches and hope he at least plays creditably in them. Can't see him making more than one r2 though, if that, and I'd bet on him crashing out of Newport early as he did at Brisbane, with one of the (many) rising young guns picking up Newport this year. Post grass ranking will line up with his current race ranking, viz around 361 or worse. [Note: Just did the sums and actually one win say at Queens minus Newport will put him around 220 rankings wise, so not quite as bad as his race ranking. Yet.]

From what I was reading this morning, Nick's Elbow means he may not play before Wimbledon...

I know this is very hopeful, but they are bold predictions anyway. Wimbledon is draw permitting, whether he draws Djokovic or Lajovic. Newport could well turn out like Brisbane, but the field there is usually quite weak, so once again depends on draw.

Otherwise it's just me foolishly leading myself to believe thet Lleyton's last grass season will be a good one

A rather alarming piece in Fairfax today on everyone's injury status (including Daria):

Hopefully just everyone feeling depressed in the aftermath, and will feel better after a short break!
