US to play Chile in the first round for 2011. Andy probably won't play next year. Gonzo is out until the French Open next year. I wonder who will replace PMac?
Round 1: US vs Chile
The United States will travel to Chile, drawing a South American opponent in the first round for the second year in a row.
The U.S. or Chile will then face the powerful Spaniards or outsider Belgium in the quarterfinals.
The first round is from March 4-6 and the quarterfinals are set for July 8-10.
Spain, a four-time winner since 2000, will travel to Belgium as an overwhelming favorite. The Belgians though, produced one of the upsets of the year by defeating Australia 3-2 in Cairns over the weekend.
A trip to Chile will be a tough first test for the new U.S. captain after Patrick McEnroe retired following last weekend’s 3-1 playoff win in Colombia.
Much like the tie in Colombia, Chile is expected to play the Americans on red clay, the favorite surface of almost any team playing the United States. Chile lost 4-1 to the Czech Republic in this year’s quarterfinals, when it was hampered without injured top player Fernando Gonzalez.
