Draw is out for Toowoomba and Luke got a WC. He takes on qualifier Andrew Whittington in the first round. Hopfully he can do well here.

Luke made quarters last week in Toowoomba. Got a first round victory in Mildura against the qualifier Zelba 6-3 6-2. Likely to play the forth seed in the next round so that will be tough for Luke. Possible quarterfinal match up against the 5th seed Jason Kubler so that would be interesting if it happened. Not sure where Luke is heading after this week but being the number 1 junior in the world he should be able to get direct entry into future tournaments so my guess would be that he'll head over to the European clay in an attempt to get ready for the junior French Open.

He lost 7-6(3) 6-1.

Really disappointed in Luke, he shouldn't be struggling this much at senior level.

7-16 at futures level is a bit below what you'd expect from a junior world number one and two time boys' Grand Slam winner. In the last year he is 6-12 at all senior levels.

I think you are being pretty harsh on Luke. He is still young and inexperienced and lost against the world number 304 and number 4 seed in the tournment. Give him time to devolp.

I guess, us couch potatoes shouldn't be judging

But he's already 18, 2 time junior champ. When Tomic just turned 16 he won a GS match, W a challenger and SF at another challenger.

I guess he could be a late developer and have Ebden like career.

You can't compare Tomic to any of our other juniors. Bernard was/is so far ahead of everyone else his age, he is probably one of three players in the last 15 years that have been so advanced in their teenage years (Nadal and Hewitt being the others). A 16 year old Tomic could probably beat the current Saville quite easily so it's just not fair to compare the two. Saville would be much more likely to follow a path of development similar to Duckworth and Mitchell.

People don't quite understand just how hard it is to transition from junior to senior level. There have been lots of world number 1 juniors that never even reach the top 200 in mens so to expect Luke to be top 300 or whatever you expect out of him at this moment is just unrealistic. He is still growing (currently 6'2) and could continue to grow for another 3 years or so. In my opinion I believe the area Luke really needs to work on is his strength, both through his core and upper body. He doesn't hit a heavy ball yet and that is so crucial in pro tennis.

Herbal, you questioned why Matt Reid travelled overseas when he could have played in Oz but say it is good to see Saville travelling overseas to play.
Is that because Saville is not a clay court player?
Reid's best surface is also not clay, but most probably perceived it easier in winning matches in Europe than battling the rest of the best and good upcoming young Aussie players. Will no doubt play a lot more in Europe now.
