Lenders: One thing people need to understand about this so-called weak era is that it was 'weak' for Federer on HC and grass and for Nadal on clay (Federer on clay too Nadal apart) because they were so much better than anyone else, for any outsider the era couldn't possibly be any harder, during 5+ years you had to either beat the best grass/HC player ever or the best clay player ever in every single Slam just to get 1 Slam title.

x = 2???

It's PEMDAS, so my steps:

-3^2 = 9

9*-1 = -9

-9 + 4 = -5

3 - (-5) = 2

I agree with Lenders.

Dylan, why are you doing your step 3 before your step 4? 3 - (-9) + 4 should be 3 + 9 + 4 imo.

Because you're supposed to add before you subtract. So even though 3 - (-9) winds up adding, I still counted it as subtracting... Not so sure of how to interpret that...

Your first two steps are right, but not the other ones. The +4 is outside the parentheses, you only add it after getting the result for 3-(-1)(9). Your thinking/step process would be correct if the equation was 3-((-1) (9) + 4)), but as it stands the 4 is outside the parentheses.

Besides, your final step would be wrong anyway, 3-(-5) equals 8.

...And the 3- isn't outside the parentheses?

Exposed. I've been in a fucking rut in math, just missed a question that had "< 3" in the equation and I thought it was my teacher being cute with a heart sign

Yeah, your previous post (reply to Litotes) was a particularly unfortunate one

The 3- is indeed outside the parentheses, but that equates to 3 minus whatever the result of the parenthesis), only then do you add 4.

Put it this way, this equation would amount to exactly the same if it was 3-(-9)+4 or even simply 3+9+4, the 9 is simply replaced by (......). You always consider what's between parentheses as one single part of a mathematical operation. So basically 3 - result of the parenthesis + 4. The result of the parenthesis is -9 so you end up 3-(-9) + 4, so 3+9+4 = 16.

This confuses me because you're still subtracting the -9 from the 3 so I don't see why you wouldn't add the 4 first. I also don't get why the 3- whatever is in the parentheses gets priority over the 4 being added to whatever is in the parentheses.

Why are you even talking about priority here? It's completely irrelevant, this is a very simple equation.

But sure, if you want to add the 4 first go ahead. You can change the order of the equation if you want if it makes it less confusing:

3+4-(-1)(9)=x.
7-(-9)=x.
7+9=x
x=16.

You have to take in mind that (-3˛) equals -3*3 and is -9.
You'd only get +9 if it was (-3)˛.

So the result is -2 (3-9+4).

I think x=-2

(-3^2) = -9, not 9 as (-3)^2 = 9

So 3 - (-1)(-9) = -6

-6+4=-2
