The Palisades Tennis Center will host a shotgun shoot-out this month — and you may well see a pro or celebrity facing the fire on court.

The second annual Shotgun 21 World Championships, which features men and women competing directly against each other on court, will take place at the Palisades Tennis Center located at 851 Alma Real Drive in Pacific Palisades, California on Sunday, July 26. The qualifying draw, which is open to the public for participation, will be at noon and the main draw will be contested from 3-7 p.m. Pacific time. The entire event is free to the public for viewing. For more information, please visit www.palitenniscenter.com, email akonstand@atonalentertainment.com or phone (310) 573-1331.

There will also be admittance of all age, gender or ability to the qualifying draw, meaning anyone off the street could qualify to play with against the pros. A committee will decide main draw spots and seedings.

A year ago, Alex Bogomolov, Jr. defeated John Isner in the semifinals, 21-20, and went on to defeat Philipp King, 21-20, in the final to win the inaugural Shotgun 21 title. King edged Sam Querrey, 21-20 in the other final after Querrey had conquered Jill Craybas, 21-19 in the quarterfinals. Querrey also beat a regular in Roger Federer's support box, rock star Gavin Rossdale, 21-14, in the second round of the 32-player draw. Rossdale beat Mike Querrey, 21-20, in the opening round. Craybas beat television personality Melissa Rivers, 21-2, in the opening round.

The Shotgun 21 format has been used for many years at the Palisades Tennis Center and was used in the qualifying tournament for three years at Tennis Channel Open. It features many unique changes to the way tennis is played and scored.

• Each player takes turn drop hitting 5 serves in a row to the deuce court and then each player takes turns drop hitting 5 serves to the ad court. This rotation continues until one player reach 21. At 20 all, the player up in rotation feeds the last point.
• A feed is considered "in" if it goes anywhere on side of the court that the feeder is serving in singles and anywhere on the side of the court the feeder is serving to plus the alley in doubles. On a traditionally painted tennis court on the back part of the court where the hash mark and the center service have a space (center of the backcourt,) players must decide whether it was on appropriate side by estimating where the line would be carried through from the center hash mark to the center service box line.
• Servers must strike the ball with their racket hand above the ball strike and below their waistline.
• There is no second serve like tradition tennis.
• Each game is played to 21 and at 20-all the next point wins.
• There are no lets or net cords in Shotgun 21.

The 32-player main draw event will take no more than 3 hours and will be played on just 4 total tennis courts. About 40 percent of the points in tennis end in aces, service winners, missed serves and returns meaning nearly half the points are over before they start.

Would be great to see Karlovic here with the serving rules. Isner and Querrey must have struggled a bit not surprisingly judging by those results even though it is only an exhibition.
