That sucks.
Thanks for information. I guess I'll find out who is playing when I walk on the grounds on Friday.

Re: New Haven Entry List/Fact Sheet (updated August 10, 2009)
James Blake's lost his last 4 matches and hasn't played since July 12th. His last hard court match was way back on March 29th in Miami. He's returning in Cincinnati and has an absolute dream draw.
* 1R: 2-0 vs. Igor Kunitsyn
* 2R: 7-0 vs. Nikolay Davydenko
* 3R: 6-0 vs. Andreev/4-1 vs. Kiefer/1-0 vs. Odesnik/2-1 vs. Simon
But if Blake doesn't make it to the quarterfinals, I could see him as a wild card in New Haven.

I can't believe they wouldn't give him one if he asks it : it would be crazy
What would be the reason for not giving it ?

Preference for US-players. Ginepri and Blake might ask for one.
edit: Ginepri's 1st round exit won't help.

That's silly : I guess Americans will be happy to watch their provincial tournament
In France, when a player of this level asks for a WC, I believe he gets one ... despite there are more French players around rank 80-150 than Americans.

New Haven didn't turn down Gasquet - Gasquet withdrew his WC request.

my french is pretty crappy but this seems to say that they refused his request rather than the other way round. It says refused for reasons that are confidential.

Right now France has 6 players in the 80-150 range and the US has 11. I don't see how that's particularly relevant, though. I like Gasquet, but it's not like he's a superstar (at least not in the US, even with tennis fans). He's had some success and a ton of talent, but for the most part he's spent his career floating around in the 10-30 range. He just doesn't stick out as someone who's going to bring a whole lot to the table in terms of fans/viewers/sponsors. It certainly doesn't help that he's been out of tennis for almost 6 months because of a scandal involving cocaine. Tournament directors aren't going to be jumping up to give him WCs, especially when there are young local players trying to get in.
