Men’s eighth seed Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina has cruised past German qualifier Florian Mayer at Margaret Court Arena on Wednesday night, dominating in a 6-1 7-5 6-2 victory.
Del Potro began his second round match in blistering style, quickly breaking the German three times. With his powerful serve and groundstrokes, the Argentine had an impressive nine winners in the first set to Mayer’s one.
In a closer second set, Mayer picked up the pace, sticking with his Argentine opponent and eventually breaking his serve to gain a 5-4 lead.
Del Potro, who won his fifth career title in Auckland last week, then broke Mayer back in what was the point of the match. The 20-year-old Argentine had to scramble to make a drop shot from Mayer, who then hit a lob which Del Potro managed to get to and then blast a passing winner.
In the final set, the in-form Del Potro got an early break and surged to a 4-1 lead. Mayer, ranked No. 450 in the world, saved one match point, but a powerful cross-court forehand winner from Del Potro sealed the set and match in an hour and 54 minutes.
The 198cm Argentine will face either Australian Bernard Tomic or Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in the next round.
