Default Consolation draws in ATP

should they be there? I think so. It would help reduce the stress on players and help the fans see there favorite players especially if there favorite player is low ranked and could lose 1st round.

Not every tournament of course, that would be to much match play but some.

Agree?

I don't think it would work. Where would the points come from? and too much match play. Good for juniors but not the pros

no, I don't agree, players have to prove their worth in every tournament, play as much as they can and winning deservedly on equal terms with everybody else

I don't think it would work because the players already play many matches and the season is very tiresome, but it's actually not a bad idea. It would be great for the fans.

16 field is too few when all top 100 players deserve a chance to play or be close to play an ATP tournament every week.

I think he means the consolation draw should be 16.

I actually think the idea is well intentioned, if completely workable, and not quite the right solution. Truthfully, I think it just comes down to that part of sport that happens in all of them - if you want to see a certain team in the Super Bowl, and they lose first...tough shit. If you want a certain team in the Euro final, and they lose, but you have tickets, that sucks.

It's sport. Favorites lose.

well we all remember the failed attempt at the round-robin format at tournaments...yes it would really be a treat for fans, but then again I think fans would rather watch the matches in the main draw than those in the consolation draw regardless.

Plus extra matches would not help players - they would make the players more tired, and I think that when a player loses 2 matches in one tournament, it would definitely hurt their confidence. If they did have double-elimination matches, I couldn't see players really taking the consolation matches seriously, which would probably result in a lot of retirements or walkovers.

Well it's a pretty good idea, but I think once players have lost, they are emotionally ready to move on. It would also make things a little bit more pointless.

Brilliant idea. Take one of the best things about tennis, dramatic upsets, and make them completely irrelevant. The French open would have been much more exciting had Soderling beaten Nadal only to have Nadal still be in the tournament and wind up winning it right?

Actually why not expand on the idea. Make every tournament round robin, with a consolation draw on top of that, thereby making the stars of the game much more accessible to the public. They will be under no pressure since they can lose 3-4 matches and still win the tournament, thereby making the game much more exciting and easily marketable.

A consolation draw isn't to win the tournament - it's for, essentially, third place?

The way I see it, if people want to be guaranteed to see their favourite players, then go on the day of their first match. I think part of the 'fun' (thats probably the wrong word, but it adds to the atmosphere) is to watch your favourite be 2 sets to love down, and think 'shit i won't see them for another year', and then watch a brilliant comeback and know they'll be sticking around for a few more days. When your fave exits on the first day its really shit (thanks a lot Santoro), but thats tennis.
