Fer and Gilles both out in one day.

I'm gutted.

I just hope Djoko*, Ferrero, or Murray can win the event now. Or maybe Llegs.

I'll be miserable if Federer, Haas, or Roddick manage to win it.

Anyone but federer. The commentators are already driving me nuts
Hope its JCF. if not him then Muzza (even though I am completely indifferent towards him)

(...)
“Get your first serve in!” “I’ve never served so badly before”, “He always chooses the right side to go, that really hacks me off” and finally, “I’m so unhappy”. This was Simon’s impromptu press conference, held over the course of the first set as he squandered an early break, battled his way back, served for the set and even had a set point, only to go down 7-4 in the eventual tiebreak.

He was looking morosely towards the French enclave in the press box containing his coach Thierry Tulasne (himself a former world No.10) and 1997 Wimbledon finalist Cedric Pioline, who seemed more concerned with watching the Centre Court scoreboard as the Amelie Mauresmo – Dinara Safina match ebbed and flowed.

While this soul-searching and chest-beating was going on, Ferrero quietly went about his business at the other end, putting in the kind of phlegmatic performance that took him as high as world number three six years ago. The 29-year-old stuck to his game plan, and the breaks continued to come.

To his credit, Simon tried everything that he could and sent down services ranging from 129 mph to a mere 64 mph at one point, but Ferrero won 29 of his 38 receiving points on the Frenchman’s second serve, while his own first service was good enough to carry him through.

He broke once mid-way through the second and again early in the third, by which time Simon was going through the motions and mentally was already in the hard-court season that will suit his game better.

I really wouldn't say he "tried everything that he could" and I doubt he was mentally already in the hard-court season since he won't play on hc until Montreal (I liked the world number three thing too) - but for those who couldn't see the match, it gives a good idea of how it looked like from Gilles' perspective.

Certainly not in the third set, but JC played the way he became a GS champion, never giving in and fighting hard. And Gilles had not enough in the tank or did not want to fight it out with him. I felt however his movement was hampered towards the end of the match.

It wasn't an interview, it's what he said on the court!
His audio interview is up now, he says his knee is fine, but his stamina wasn't good enough today because he could hardly train lately:

His audio interview is available on the fft:
http://www.fft.fr/wimbledon/2009/?id=5079

The 1st set was the key and the serve and physically it was too hard for him as he trained only one hour that represented only the 1st set duration but it looks like his knee is ok now. His knee was ok but not his heart. So finally it was a physical resistance problem. And he is happy about his performance in grand slams so far this year.

You were faster than me Fran but seriously it is pity he does not wear a microphone, he is better to analyze his drawbacks than the journalists even on the court
it is amazing how he is talking on the court (not always really polite way btw)

Sorry! I wasn't always having the sound on, did he really say "I'm unhappy"? It looks like a bad translation of "pas heureux" = unlucky, because it's his style to complain that the opponent is lucky and he isn't. :calimero:

In the audio interview he says he's happy he could play 4 matches without any pain because it was really hurting when he played the exhibition the week before Wimby. He was a bit afraid at the beginning of his match because he had to run so much, but the knee was not the issue today. His fitness just wasn't good enough against such a tough opponent.

i did not notice it, it was not always easy to hear him well.
He was more complaining about his serve in fact and to the umpire at the beginning about the field.

lol. I really like the way the French Journalists write. The press on this side of the pond writes with 1 template, very general indifferent tone most of the time. I'm glad they are kinda nice to him, saying that he had tried everything which is probably a bit generous.

And thanks to you both, Fran and krn for the news and translation, I was wondering what he was yelling at in the first set, all I can figure out was that it's nothing good.

He did look a little spent after the 1 hr long first set, not helping using up some of the energy on the emotion. But I'm glad that he is taking a positive out of this slam. Hope he can generate some momentum onward.
------

PS. Ooops, it wasn't the French journalist, I just realized this is the interview on the Wimby website. Well, I thought the English commentators were all pretty nice to Gilles, now it seems the English columnist is pretty nice too :P .

Gosh guys I had the whole village descend on me for the tennis, some were a bit surprised to be watching Gillou but it's my house and what I say goes

Poor Gillou He wasn't at the races today but he gave us a divine match against Hanescu, the shot of the tournament (that flick underhand down the line type thingy) he went farther than he's managed before, not only in this slam but all the slams and all the time looking completely divine Can't really ask for much more than that. Yes I am a bit drunk
