Murray! I remember being impressed by the casual way he disposed of the other Andy at Wimby 2006 - tho' I've nothing against Roddick - so that's a degree of fandom, I guess!

Shit. He was perfectly fine when I saw him practise on Monday and Tuesday. Why couldn't his match have been scheduled for one of those days?

Back injury, eh? I guess that's why I saw him lying on his back on the floor of the fitness centre today. Must have been trying to relax it or something. This was at about 1pm.

Yeah its Gael's wrist unfortunately Same as the Australian Open. He got a lot of treatment on it during his match yesterday and looked in considerable pain with it. Poor Gael

I'm thinking that he will have a sore back for Wimbledon too. I think he has had enough of tennis...why subject himself to the stress of defending many Wimby points?

You're absolutely right, that reminds me - does anyone have a workable link to his RG 2007 "urban tennis" interview with Barbara Schett? She asks him " Well Marat how are you getting into the tournament this year?" and he replies "With allergies". I can't see it on YouTube and despite finding it on Truveo ("Safin hopes for luck") - http://www.truveo.com/search.php?que...=10&view=basic - the vid doesn't work in the UK.

I agree, it's most likely a precautionary measure, same as when Federer pulled out of Dubai this year at the last minute. He could walk and talk and even went to the players' party but it would have been a long-term risk to play the tournament. Marat clearly wants to have a second week fling with Wimbles this year, on the turf he (semi) finally made his own! (terrible pun intended )

*twilight zone music* I too have pulled out of my tennis matches this week with a back injury ... pulled a muscle due to copious amounts of coughing ... hopefully I'll be OK by Wimby

Dubai, 24 February 2009, first round v Gasquet

To boldly go off topic here, I'm guessing Lahyani's the umpire Marat refers to in that recent Independent article (Hothead Who Cooled Down), and the match in question would have been this one in Dubai: "I argued with an umpire recently and apologised to him afterwards. He said: 'I understand, I understand.' It was just in the heat of the moment during the match. Afterwards everything was cool." And he shook Lahyani's hand at the end of the first set.

The difference with Marat and his dealings with umpires is that he gets angry, sure, but I've never seen him be personally abusive towards them, unlike some other players.

Incidentally, I'm hoping Marat might play at the Boodles exhibition tournament for some grass match practice...there's only a few players announced so far and they tend to leave it fairly late. He's been on the list for quite a few of the last few years, so here's hoping
