only Malisse, Mahut and Rochus still in the running in Halle/Queens. All the rest allready qualified for Wimbledon. But I doubt they will give wildcards to Rochus or Malisse

Isn't Malisse former semifinalist in Wimbledon? he could get one.
Mahut also deserves another one I think.

what a waste. it is not the sence of a WC to give it to any player who would be next in
Malisse, Rochus, Grosjean are 3 former good grass players
and there are several newcomers around
bad choice, like last year

It is quite ridiculous, especially considering how will Oli did in Halle.

Play-Offs:

Quote:
Dan Smethurst, Marcus Willis, Amanda Elliott and Elizabeth Thomas came through the Wimbledon wild card play-offs on Thursday to gain entry into qualifying for The Championships.

Smethurst, the in-form player prior to the play-offs, defeated No.3 seed Josh Milton 4-6 6-1 6-4 to book his place in next week’s qualies.
The 19 year-old from Lancashire fell a set behind in all three of his matches this week but impressively fought back strongly on each occasion.
Willis secured his wild card having spent much less time on court, beating Burnham Arlidge 6-1 6-2 in the final round.
On Wednesday, Willis gained a walkover after Colin Fleming was forced to withdraw due to commitments at Queen’s Club where he has teamed up with Ken Skupski to reach the doubles quarter final, knocking out the Bryan brothers en route.
Amanda Elliott, the No.2 seed and British No.11, saw off Jocelyn Rae 6-2 7-5 to book a spot in qualifying for the second consecutive year. In 2008, the 19 year-old won her opening match but bowed out in the second round, losing in three sets to Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia.
Elizabeth Thomas, who was also successful in last year’s play-offs, repeated the success by winning a three-sets thriller in the last match on court, defeating Yasmin Clarke 7-6(5) 6-7(7) 7-5.
The Wimbledon wild card play-offs began on Tuesday and gave British players the chance to compete for two men’s and women’s wild cards into qualifying for The Championships.

The last wild card was not awarded so by rule one additional player from the alternate list will receive direct acceptance (not a wild card):

Question Wildcards earnt or given ?

Due to yet another poor showing by Britain at Wimbledon it has made me question the policy with wildcards .
Im British and i find it is appaling that we only have 2 Brits out of the mass number of players who contested in the main draw due to the farcical hand out of wildcards , perhaps British players should start to earn their wildcards eg. Bogdanovic in particular and the likes of James Ward and Josh Goodall !
In my opinion it just illustrates the poor British attitude to tennis and how so many of our players survive on handouts from the LTA whether it be the supplying of a very expensive, high quality coaches or a wildcards to Wimbledon or Queens which means a tidy amount of prize money for basically just turing up.
Players such as Taylor Dent and Bernard Tomic are much more deserving of wildcards into the main draw and i feel would provide more competition to the field.

So my question is where do you sit on this issue ?

Just to add if Baltacha hadn't won it would be the worst British showing in the Open Era !

Default Re: Wildcards earnt or given ?

Well question is, if Tomic for example provides more of a challenge, why didn't he manage to qualify?

The argument is really to who they hand them out to. After all, all the players they gave them to merited them according to the criteria set down. No idea if you watched the Goodall match, but he did take it to a 5th set and I think deserved his WC. Boggo.... well, you could argue he's playing the 20th seed but I didn't see all of his match, so I can't really comment, nor can I comment on Ward's game.

As for the woman, I have no views really.....

But why are Dent and Tomic more deserving? To me they seem like names that a thrown around a lot but I have no idea what they have done. Players should be given wildcards based on recent, impressive performances. It's a tough one, and something that will always be argued about strongly.
