Jonesie stepped up in round 1 of qualies in Sydney, beating 110 ranked big serving giant German Daniel Brands 7-5, 6-3. Worked his way into the match, matched Brands to get to 6-5, then broke Brands to get 1st set. Dominated Brands in 2nd set to lead 5-1, then serve out match at 2nd offering 6-3
In second match Jonesie went down to No.3 seed American Ryan Sweeting 6-2, 7-5. Match was played in windy conditions (Homebush of course) and was a closer affair than score-line suggested. Jonesie played well but did not cope with the power of Sweeting at first, then worked his way into the net and the match.
I agree with RustyOz's assessment. I only watched from mid way through the second set and he was definitely matching it with Sweeting particularly in the power department. Just a few points here and there proved the difference sadly. Such a shame he had to be on court 9 as there was no seating or room for anyone to really see. It was latish in the day and I am sure there would have been a better court around.
