Chilean tennis player Massu recovering from hernia surgery

SANTIAGO, Dec. 1(Xinhuanet)-- Chile's number one tennis player Nicolas Massu was recovering Wednesday from a hernia surgery he underwent.
Massu was operated Tuesday here, right after returning from Mexico where he had played a friendly match against Peruvian Luis Horana, who defeated him 6-4 and 6-2.
Massu, winner of two gold medals in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, tried to avoid the operation although it was needed becauseof problems he had since a tournament in Bern, Switzerland.
He suffered from intense pains during the match against Horna and he had to go direct to the operating room right after his return to Chile.
According to the doctors in the successful operation, Massu will be released from hospital by Thursday at the latest, in orderto start recovery for two weeks.
The recovery will prevent the Olympic champion from participating in an exhibition that was going to be part of the fund-raising event for handicapped children in Chile.
The doubles match on Saturday was going to include Massu's teammate Fernando Gonzalez, Chilean president Ricardo Lagos and the Teleton Director, television host Mario Kerutzberger"Don Francisco."
According to local reports, Massu would be replaced by former soccer player Ivan Zamorano, but the tennis star would act as a referee.
