Dinara lost 7-6(4) 1-6 3-6 to Azarenka in her QF match.

10 DF's - 7 in the 1st set and 3 in the 3rd set!
Dinara broke Azarenka 5 times, but Azarenka broke her 9 times. What a see-saw match.

I feel bad for Dinara.

Thanks for positng the itw. May I just point out that Dinara is a real Marat's sister?

Can you just talk about the playing conditions here....?
DINARA SAFINA: There is mountains and the ball flies a little bit more. So I guess this is the reason.

DINARA SAFINA: Well, he was supposed to retire already last year. (laughter.) He's keep playing. You know, for me it doesn't matter. I just want him to be happy, you know. He had a very long career. He had a successful career. And if for any reason he's not enjoying anymore -- I mean, because by the years, you know, he play the same tournaments through the whole life, you know. And I guess you come to the routine, and it's everything the same, same people. So if it doesn't make you happy it makes no sense. So I just want him to be happy.

Q. You've play tennis all your life. You've been around tennis all your life with your mom and all that and the club. Do you think you missed out on anything outside of tennis?
DINARA SAFINA: I think so. You know, it's -- because we have no other life, you know. We don't know anything. I think that's why many players keep playing, because they try to stop but they cannot find themself .... But some of them, they don't have family. I think it's not an easy to finish the tennis and to decide what you want to do in your life.

Q. Were you close to him?
DINARA SAFINA: I mean, yeah, very close, you know. It's -- it was -- they didn't told me, actually, and it was strange. I was sitting at the table, and suddenly my manager comes and says, you know, I'm sorry, your grandfather died. It was already like two weeks ago and I had no idea because my parents didn't want me -- because I was playing the tournament.
Thanks for posting. I love the fact she's not afraid to show her vulnerability or give anything but the unvarnished truth. She also has the same pragmatic outlook and engaging lack of pretension as Marat! Sounds like the coach put his foot in it big time, though, that kind of news ought to come from the parents surely.

The coach has nothing to do with it. Her family decided not to tell her while she was in the tournament. Her manager (Amit?) just messed it up.

Slip of the tongue, I meant manager, not coach.

It's kind of easy to assign blame here, but if her manager knew her parents didn't want her to know, so as not to be upset during a tournament, he'd kept quiet (I suppose all managers want their charges to do well), so my guess is maybe he thought she already knew and just wanted to say he was sorry...

yes, of course he didn't know. I didn't want to assign blame on him. It was a confusion.

Here's a picture of Dinara in Miami:

I don't care too much for her outfit (I won't forgive her for putting on those fugly shoes ) but she wasn't the worst by far, it seems that the general dress sense had hit an all-time low.

(my personal favourite are the snake pants )

She looks nice, actually, and brown hair suits her. (Hate the shoes too, though )
