here's the whole interview:

from championat.ru - May 12, 2009

First match of Marat Safin in Madrid turned out to be the last one. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been showing great results lately. But to watch Marat on court & not to cheer for him is not possible, because during a match he is as sincere, and emotional, and fast, like in his young days. And even though there are new heroes in tennis nowadays, Marat Safin will stay himself, and people all over the world continue to go watch his matches. After the match against Tsonga, Marat gave interview to championat.ru about his game & tennis in general.

How about the match?

Marat: I did not feel comfortable, I made so many idiotic errors, it was sad, I got frustrated, but it’s not worth it..Today was one of those days when you run around the court, but it’s pointless. Tsonga did everything he should have done. He is a top 10 player after all."

At previous tournaments, you were leading in a match, and lost all 3 matches. Was it hard to get over those & come to Madrid?

Marat: “Of course, these kind of matches ruin your mood, but you have to focus on your game, and make yourself think less during a match. It’s disappointing when you are close to victory & lose the match, but life is a difficult thing. I take comfort in a fact that I played well.”

This is your last season – do you feel like you showed your fans all you’ve got?

Marat: “Of course, I want to leave on a high note, not in “challenge” events. I am retiring not because I can’t play anymore, but because I’ve had enough. I don’t want to travel around the world, don’t want to be among veterans that can not win a single match. I respect myself, and decided it’s enough. That’s why I am not upset and I want to finish the way I decided.”

Regarding R. Gasquet’s situation – do you think players have to ‘safeguard’ their drinks at parties so nobody would put something bad there?

Marat: “That’s absurd. Who is ‘safe-guarding’ their drinks at parties? You can’t always cover your drink & write your name on it.. It’s as ridiculous as reporting where & when you will be in case they want to come to collect a sample from you. One day, two guys knocked on my door at 6 am, I was sleeping peacefully, they wanted my urine & blood sample, and told me to hurry. I think it’s taking it too far..”

About your last season. Is it better to serve your energy to play at big tournaments or are you trying to play as many different tournaments to say good-buy to your fans?

Marat: “It doesn’t look like people eager to say bye to me : it was not many fans today – only couple in my box, and some people in stadium (smiles). I am on tour for 11 years, and I picked my favourite tournaments, and it’s not important if I win or lose. In most cases, I lose in 1st round, but it gives me an opportunity to enjoy the city that I come to. Tour organizers have known me for many years, they treat me well, and I do the same for them.”

What can you afford now that you couldn’t when you were on top? Do you think fans will remember you when you leave?

Marat: “Everyone asks me this question. I don’t know. People can remember me how they want to, I don’t think about that. I am doing the same things that I did for the last 10 years. I get up in a morning, get in a car, go to practice, come back at 6 pm..(smiles). In an evening, I watch couple of movies, maybe soccer, read, have dinner, browse Internet, go to bed. Everything as usual. It’s boring, I know, but I’ve been doing it for the past 10 years. I had good & bad moments. Sometimes, you go out to have fun, but whole life comes down to tennis."

And nothing else?

Marat: “I have my whole life ahead..”

Thanks for the interview. So glad he said that he "takes comfort in a fact that he played well” in those matches he lost. Wish Madrid hadn't ended so soon but maybe he will surprise us at the French.

And yeah... I don't really think his life is as boring as he wants us to believe.

Of course, he knows better about the saying good bye thing.
But I was surprised to see so many empty seats. Same thing happened in Barcelona.

thanks for posting the interview, amdany!

MADRID, May 11 (Reuters) - Russian former world number one Marat Safin is looking forward to life after tennis when he retires from the professional tour at the end of the year and says he does not care how people remember him.
The 29-year-old twice grand slam champion, who is on a farewell sweep of the events he has graced since he turned professional in 1997, lost in the first round of the Madrid Open on Monday to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"They can remember me how they want," Safin, the U.S. Open champion in 2000 and winner of the Australian Open title in 2005, told a news conference. "I don't care. I'm not really thinking about it all day."
Safin said he had not eased back on the regime he had followed during his decade at the top of the sport even though it was his final year.
"You wake up in the morning and you get on a bus or in a car at 11 o'clock," he said.
"You come back around six. You watch a couple of episodes of something on TV. You read a book. You go for dinner. You look at the internet a little bit. And then you go to sleep.
"It's boring I know but it's the routine you have to do because you can't do anything else.

"That's our job for 10 years. Some great moments, some bad moments. Sometimes we can get out and have some fun but most of the time you have to be focused on tennis.
"Life is waiting for me after," he added with a smile.
Sounds like the life of many of us (except we get on the bus/in the car way earlier in the morning )

I'd like to think that Gasquet is a nice boy but people don't go around slipping drugs in other people's drinks randomly. I've heard of some cases where girls are being drugged with rohypnol obviously and then get ***** but on the whole this is no common practice. Dude, they're just too expensive. Plus, cocaine? First of all you have to snort it. Second of all, try dissolving that into a drink withouth it looking flaky And lastly, drugs taste really REALLY bitter. You can't miss it.

Tom Boonen got caught again as well. Claims that he was too drunk to even know that he took it. Uhm, yeah, right!
Actually, girls being ***** after being drugged are rare now because we've heard a lot not to let a glass on a table, etc. (except Marat who must have lived in a cave ). But a few years ago they weren't so rare.

As for Gasquet, there was a Doctor interviewed today in the French newspaper Le Parisien. A specialist of drugs. He doesn't believe in Gasquet's father's theory of conspiracy by pouring cocaine into his glass, like rapists do. Because the amount of cocaine found in the samples tested by the lab equals the amount of cocaine you can find in samples from junkies who sniff a line of coke. So it means he obviously took quite a lot, and the doc said there's no way he couldn't have noticed it in a glass and couldn't have tasted it while drinking.
This said, he says cocaine can be mixed to other things. He mentioned some ointment which is rubbed on the skin. And also he said he can be mixed with tobacco and if it's a little amount he says you can smoke the cigarette and notice nothing weird.

And nope, you don't just snort cocaine. You can inhale it, smoke it, and of course inject it. And, as I was saying in GM yesterday, I found a serious website saying when it's injected it can either be dissolved and injected alone, or dissolved in some liquid and injected with the liquid. Which probably means once it's dissolved in the liquid you can also drink it
But given the amount found in his body I was discussing it with another poster and we were thinking it was impossible he didn't either see it in the glass (due to different chemical compositions) or taste it. Which the doc in the newspaper confirmed. As for the cigarette theory, I don't know if he smokes, but anyway the doc said it wouldn't be noticeable if it's only a little cocaine mixed with tobacco; so again, that doesn't seem to help his case.

(although maybe if he was really really really drunk he wouldn't have noticed anything. But that's not good for his image either. Well, that's slightly better but...)

Sorry for being off-topic everyone, just wanted to rebound on Ulla's post.

In an interview in Madird,Safina was asked about her brother's decision to retire this year, then she said “It's time for him to enjoy his life and I am happy he has choosen a girl that I appreciate so much, and you know I have beaten her for the first time within 4 meets in Stuttgart”.
Apprently, the journalist was shocked by this unexpected news and went on asking details,“what?”
Safina:"Sorry,I mean beating every girl makes me happy,WTA is so cmpetetive now, isn't it?"

Note:Safina didn't mention the girl's name, but Hantuchova is the right girl as she described

That's really far-fetched though

I know but I was talking about your typical party goer who just wants to experiment a little. I assumed Dicky isn't an intravenous drug abuser and went with the most plausible option which is to just snort it. I can't really see him freebasing either.

Anyway, it's just my experience that in most cases the initially oh-so-innocent dopees admit their fault later on (usually when they are caught a second time and there's really no point in denying it anymore). They're (rightfully) worried about their career so they have to lie and find all these really far-fetched theories about how they were not aware they took anything and how someone must have tricked them and blah blah blah.
...but the truth is mostly very simple: they're young, rich, partying and tempted by life's little forbidden pleasures.. and they made a mistake.

maybe also more stressed than your usual youngster? or maybe am trying to find excuses for them.

Anyway, to me the only relevant question in this case is: is the drug performance enhancer? If it is and the guy took it willingly, then ok, suspend him, fine him - do whatever, cause he's cheating on his opponents. If the drug is not a performance enhancer, then I really do not get it why a tennis player has to be punished more than any other citizen, really

it doesn't have to be a performance enhancer. the doping rulebooks have a whole list of drugs that are illegal, that may or may not be performance enhancers so whether it's a performance enhancer or not isn't the question

yes, i know that they can be banned for recreational drugs as well - all I wanted to say is that the only relevant question should be whether the drug is or not performance enhancer - and for other drugs they should just obbey the law - as long as it doesn't help their tennis, then it's their life and they should be responsible and punished for what they do like any normal citizen...ethe whole thing about being examples for youngsters - what about teachers? are they banned if they sniffed a bit? or more importantly, are they tested for it, let alone that often?
