Default Lance Armstrong and 2003 Laureus Sportsman of the Year

As you undoubtedly all know, all of the awards and competitions Lance Armstrong won are rescinded due to him being caught cheating. However, since Laureus World Sports Awards 2015 are being held in some 10 days, it got me thinking about this particular accolade.

Just to remind some of you, Armstrong won Laureus Sportsman of the Year 2003 (that's for the accomplishments in 2002 calendar year, btw). The other 4 (yes, back then, it was still 5 nominees, as opposed to 6, as it is now) who were nominated that year in that category were:

-Ole Einar Bj°rndalen
-Ronaldo
-Michael Schumacher
-Tiger Woods

Now, my question is: who do you think should have won, instead of Armstrong? Which of these 4 guys had the most successful year in 2002?

I personally think it comes down between Bj°rndalen and Schumacher (Ronaldo had as good a year as them, IMO, but we all know football players never win this award, so...).

2002 was arguably the most successful year of Bj°rndalen's career, who is himself arguably the greatest athlete in any of the winter sports in the last couple of decades). Absolutely dominated both the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and 2002-2003 Biathlon World Cup (with 4 gold medals in the former).

Now, the relationship between Schumacher and Laureus Sports Award is very peculiar. On one hand, he has won the award for the best sportsman of the year twice (only 3 other people won the award multiple times), however, one could very well argue that he got them for 2 wrong years. Namely, he got it for his achievements in 2001 and 2003 Formula One seasons. IMO, there is little doubt that both his 2002 and 2004 were superior seasons, and the 2 best seasons of his career (they were especially better than the 2003 one, where he was just a shadow of the other 3 seasons).

To make it more understandable in tennis terms, it would be as if Roger Federer got the Sportsman of the Year award for his 2004 and 2007 seasons, but NOT for 2005 and 2006.

All in all, I think I would ultimately give the nod to Schumacher, but with the caveat that I would take away his award from 2003, and give it to Valentino Rossi (poor guy had five nominations and not one win).

Default Re: Lance Armstrong and 2003 Laureus Sportsman of the Year

Schumacher's car was so dominant in 2002. He was sensational but for me his greatest achievements came in times of competition and adversity, years like 2000. For me it's difficult to say if he was peaking that year because he had a massive equipment advantage and a team mate who not only couldn't compare, he wasn't allowed to (Austrian GP). I think Schumacher was at his very best from 1995-1999. The 2002 campaign was marked by a performance and reliability advantage. He made more mistakes in 2003 without doubt, but that's because he was pushed much harder, and I might apply a similar line of reasoning to 2004.

If Rossi should have won it for any one year it would have been 2004 for me when he first joined Yamaha. They guy was at his absolute peak from 2003-2005, 2002 was not one of his very finest years in my opinion.

I consider the Laureus award pretty irrelevant, but of those options I'd say Schumacher or perhaps Ronaldo. His World Cup was beautifully poetic, although I accept he was in a brilliant team and his greatness that year centred around a few weeks.

Schumacher won the 2003 World Championship because Kimi's McLaren updates were badly bungled by their fail in trying to produce the MP4-18 which turned out the be crap and Juan Fail Montoya and his shitty driving/tyre problems. So not, it shouldn't be him imo for the 2004 award (based on 2003 performances?)

I agree with you there, just to clear several things:

1)I did not suggest that Rossi should have gotten the award for his 2002 campaign, but 2003.
2)I agree that his 2004 was even better, but I suggested 2003 in order to correct giving a perhaps an undeserved win for Schumi there, since I am giving him an extra one for 2002.

Yes, the 2004 award he got was for his performances in 2003 Formula One season.

In my opinion, Schumacher was the third best driver of 2003 behind Raikkonen and Alonso but it was close. Schumi had a fast car but did have some bad luck. Though Raikkonen also lost that clear win in Germany. It was an epic year.

Apologies. I misread what you wrote in the first post. It's difficult to do it this way because it's naturally revisionist; for instance in 2004 what Federer achieved was remarkable, a 3-Slam year and we had no idea that by 2011 it would be done 4 more times. But I am biased towards motorsport so I'd still go for Rossi (much as I was hoping Gibernau would win that title).

All that I write must be taken with the disclaimer that I know very little about golf or winter sports.

I don't consider racing or golf to be sports, so I dunno.

Bjorndalen. Schumi already had one, so it's a no brainer.
