8370, will it ever be surpassed?
Roger Federer holds a record for most ATP points, 8.370 at the end of 2006 by the old system, which would be 16.720 of the new points. Do you think we will see ever someone achieving as many points?
Nadal currently has 14.510, even if he won the USO and Rome and held all his points from the other events (except olympics, which he could replace with a win on a 500 event), he would have 16.300, so he would probably need to reach the semis of the Masters Cup as well!!!
Also, the system now gives less points than it did for any result worse than W, so the record could be unattainable.
What do you think, will we ever see this record broken? by Rafa? IMHO, it is impossible, specially with the new system.

Nadal already has more points than Pete did in his career. He's got too much to defend now.

Would be interesting to see Federer's points total if we were to convert his results to the new system (ISG -> ATP 500, ranking point substitutions, etc.).
I think it's extremely unlikely that that record will be broken. Federer's 2006 season was almost perfect. Even if somebody achieves a CYGS it will be hard to beat that record.

It's actually very easy to compare the old record to the current points, by assigning the new system on the old results.
By doing that, Federer lose:
250 for Doha (still 250 in the new system),
120 for Dubai (300 instead of 420),
100 for MC (600 instead of 700),
100 for Rome (600 instead of 700),
200 for RG (1200 instead of 1400),
200 for Halle (250 instead of 450),
25 for Cincy (45 instead of 70).
All the rest are the same - he even had 4 500-events in his rankings...
So the record by the new system is 15745 - still a very high records which is unlikely to be broken by Nadal IMO.

Thanks, certainly that way it seems much more doable.
Maybe Nadal could get him this year then. A possible path.
Current points: 14.510
Reaches Dubai SF: +30
Wins his DC tie with Serbia, 1 match: +40 (not sure how this works!!!)
Gets a Win and a SF in IW + Miami: +210
Wins Rome: +990
Total= 15.780
Highly unlikely in his current form, yet possible.
