If you notice the 2009 AO final was the first time Roger served poorly against Nadal on grass/hard. Just interesting that with the pressure of going for 5th straight Wimbledon he served 71%, but 14th slam somehow caused him to be too nervous to serve properly.

I don't think it's just because of that. I'm quite sure that he has been scarred really badly because of the Wimbledon loss and we might see more of these low serving percentages in the future against Mugboar.

Ye, I just think because with a regular serve he has, he scores alot of aces/winners against almost everybody,..but Rafa is waiting for a serve like 5meters from the baseline,.. even if it was a 2nd serve,.. and then roger is forcing too much,.. trying to give his 'serving' game some advantage,..coz if rafa catches the serve ,..here comes the long rally which will probably end with federer's backhand error,.. He just have to do more of S&V

One could actually say that he was below 51% because he spinned in more serves to get them in during this last match with Nadal than any other match I have ever seen him play, and definitely more than in any of thos Slam finals.

Yeah but if you go back to 2008 Wimbly final his 1st serve was really cracking. For some reason a week ago it lacked pace.

Good thread. Yep, Federer served BY FAR the worst he's ever served in a major final in the 2009 AO. No question. Not only was it his worst %, but he was spinning a lot of them in (as NYCtennisfan pointed out) and he wasn't hitting the corners much either.

Even with Federer choking terribly on his break points (YET AGAIN!!), I still have to believe he would've won this match (maybe even comfortably) if he had served as well as he usually does.

It is, alas, like Fed said himself, that he kind-of handed over the match to Nadal, due to his own errors, inabilities and mental inaptitude. At least I still think that was for 85% the cause of this loss of his, as I also believe that his emotional breakdown during the trophy presentation was more caused by his realization that he failed so terribly all by HIMSELF rather than by his disappointment on the loss itself.

Disclaimer: Not at all saying that Nadal didn't deserve this victory. He fully did. Nadal kept his cool, and while not playing his best himself, he took his chances where Roger failed terribly.

I think he was going for too much on his first serves seeing as how Nadal was/is returning well...
Maybe the back injury contributed to the fiasco that was Roger's serving at the AO final.
What were the serving stats for the 2008 French final? I'd be interested to see them.
