What surface is it? I think on a Greek site it said hard, but I think that was referring to the Jo'burg Challenger, because they said same courts as the Rhodos challenger.

Baghdatis itching for more action ahead of SA Open

Johannesburg, South Africa
By Philippa Francis

Despite a disappointing first round loss to Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen in the Brisbane International earlier this week, likeable Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis is still confident of starting 2009 on a positive note and winning a Grand Slam one day.

After playing the Australian Open, which starts on January 19, Baghdatis will travel to Johannesburg for the SA Tennis Open to be held at Montecasino from February 2-8, where he hopes to get as much match practice as possible.

Speaking to the South African media yesterday from Brisbane where he is preparing for the Australian Open, the 23-year-old said his first round loss to Nieminen was very disappointing. “I was fine for the first set and a half, then I felt really tired,” Baghdatis said. “I was also stressed before the match, which is normal, but I couldn’t handle it due to lack of match practice. I need to play more matches and get to the point where I go out there and enjoy it again.”

He will be satisfied if he makes it to the second week of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament in Australia. “It will be a good start to the new year. I will be happy,” he said.

Although enthusiastic and ready for a comeback from wrist and back injuries in 2008, the former world no 8 does not have aspirations to challenge the top seeds just yet. Andy Murray has a big chance in the Australian Open, says Baghdatis, but so do many others. “Tennis is such a competitive sport at the moment, there are lots of players who could worry Federer and Nadal in the tournament,” he said.

Baghdatis, whose world ranking dropped to 96 last year, will be joining an impressive line-up of professionals in the first full ATP tournament to be staged in South Africa since 1995, which carries prize-money of R5-million.

He has played three of the other big attractions to the tournament – world No 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, of France, David Ferrer (No 12), from Spain, and the colourful Frenchman Gael Monfils (ranked 13). “I have had some wins and some losses against all of them,” he said.

Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, 36, one of the most experienced players on the men’s tour, will also be playing in the event.

“The SA Tennis Open is going to be a great competition and I have heard the casino is a beautiful place. I am ready to fight for every match I play,” he said. “I wouldn’t normally play tournaments straight after a Grand Slam event but after a tough last year with little tennis, I need lots of matches. “I thought it would be a good idea playing those matches in South Africa.”

Baghdatis, who remains one of the most personable players on the men’s circuit, is also looking forward to meeting some of the South African Cypriot community when he visits the country in February.

The 2006 Australian Open finalist said he remains motivated because of his love of tennis and the spectators. “It is my job to motivate myself and play tennis. I love the game, there are so many good emotions. “I play to get those emotions again in front of the wonderful crowds,” said the effervescent Baghdatis.

He has not played much tennis at altitude in his career and is unsure how the Johannesburg conditions will affect his game. Also a soccer fan, Baghdatis said it would be great to come to South Africa in 2010 for the World Cup. “I already have tickets, so if I have time, why not come and watch some matches.”

^Yeah there are many Greeks, particularly Greek-Cypriots in Johannesburg. I know a guy who is Greek-Cypriot and was bron and raised in Johannesburg, but he now lives in NYC. Marcos will definetely get tons of support there.

Baghdatis here to play tennis and meet people

January 29, 2009 Edition 1

A little weary after his flight from Melbourne, charismatic Cypriot-Greek Marcos Baghdatis arrived in Johannesburg this week with characteristic charm and a declaration that his comeback in the current Australian Open had been "right on-target".

Baghdatis, the first of the major tennis drawcards for next week's rejuvenated South African Open at Montecasino to arrive in the country, had set himself the objective of reaching the fourth round in Melbourne after a miserable, injury-marred 2008.

And he achieved the feat while accounting for 16th-seeded Robin Soderling in the second round and 23rd seeded Mardy Fish in the third round, before bowing out to defending champion and third seeded Novak Djokovic in four sets in the fourth round.

"It was more than I could have expected, accounting for two of the seeds and pushing a player of Djokovic's calibre at the same time," said Baghdatis. "With my form improving all along and no noticeable side-effects from last year's injuries.

He said he still expected either of the accomplished top seeds, Raphael Nadal or Roger Federer, to end up with the Australian Open title because of their proven class on the big occasions - but Andy Roddick and Fernando Verdasco are dangerous form players who are capable of causing an upset.

"My objective now is to win the tournament at Montecasino and take my recovery one step further," said Baghdatis.

"But I realise this is a huge task with players of the calibre of the world's seventh-seeded Jo- Wilfried Tsonga and 12-ranked David Ferrer in the field."

=============================================

Good luck, Marcos!

South African Open Burnishes List of Entrants

Mark Smit
30 January 2009

Johannesburg — MORE lustre was added yesterday to the field for the first Open tennis championship to be played in SA for almost 15 years.

It was announced yesterday that Mahesh Bhuphati, one of the world's best doubles players who has made it to the Australian Open final, had entered the doubles draw for next week's ATP South African Open at Montecasino. He will play with fellow Indian Rohan Bopanna.

If Bhuphati and his regular partner, Mark Knowles of the Bahamas, win in Melbourne Bhuphati will have won all four Grand Slam doubles titles in his career. He is ranked sixth in the world but his doubles ranking will improve by the time he gets to Johannesburg.

He won the French Open in 1999 and 2001, Wimbledon in 1999 (all with Leander Paes) and the US Open in 2002 with Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

Bhuphati and Paes also finished runners-up in Melbourne in 1999, the year they were ranked the world's best doubles combination. Bhuphati and Knowles beat Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Oliver Marach of Austria 6-3 6-1 in yesterday's semifinals in Melbourne for a place in tomorrow's final.

Bhuphati will also be going for his seventh mixed doubles Grand Slam title, remarkably all with different partners.

He won the Australian Open title in 2006 with Martina Hingis and this year teams up with compatriot Sania Mirza. They are in the semifinals.

Spanish world No12 David Ferrer has entered the doubles with compatriot Ivan Navarro, while South African Davis Cup player Rik de Voest teams up with Australian Ashley Fisher.

Argentinian Marcos Baghdatis () is down to play with another singles entrant, Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, while SA's main hopes of success in the Open rest with doubles team of Jeff Coetzee and Wesley Moodie.

The pair reached a high of sixth in the world on the ATP doubles rankings before Moodie had a long lay-off for rehabilitation to a long-running knee injury. He returned in October and he and Coetzee reached the finals of the Paris Masters.

They followed that by reaching the semifinals in Stockholm and Lyon-- results which got them into the year-end ATP World Tour Masters in Shanghai.

Coetzee and Moodie are ranked 13th and 14th respectively as individuals and ended last year in the top eight.

In Shanghai they won only once, being beaten by Bhuphati and Knowles, but pulling off a win against the US's Bryan brothers , who have been ranked No1 for the past few years. As a team, Coetzee and Moodie have beaten every top team in the world in the past 18 months.

"SA has a rich history in doubles with great players such as Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan, Gordon Forbes and Abe Segal and even Wayne Ferreira and Pietie Norval, who won silver at the Barcelona Olympics," said SA Tennis Association CEO Ian Smith. "It will be marvellous to see that tradition continued at Montecasino next week."

Monfils and Santoro have withdrawn from the tournament. Marcos will be eighth-seeded.

The field is weak; great opportunity for him to do something really good here.
