Kim Clijsters' father dies

BRUSSELS (AFP) — Former Belgian international footballer Leo Clijsters, father of former tennis world number one Kim, died on Sunday aged 52 after a long battle with lung cancer.
Clijsters - capped 40 times and a member of the Belgium team that reached the 1986 World Cup semi-finals - was surrounded by his family when he died.
Clijsters, who was named Belgian player of the year in 1988 and won the Cup Winners Cup in 1988 with Mechelen, had announced he was seriously ill early last year shortly after Kim had retired from the tennis circuit.
Kim had wanted to give him a grandchild before he died and her wish came true when she and husband Brian Lynch had a baby daughter Jada in February last year.

I see on one of our news sites Kim & Elke have written a short press release asking to let the family grieve in peace and quiet in this difficult time; it also says he will be cremated.
I admit I don't know that much about him except that he won the Gouden Schoen (Golden Shoe) back when Belgium still meant smth in the soccer world. This is just incredibly depressing news.  Only 52 years old... He left us too soon. |

The man played a great role, not only in the top years of our national football team but also in the peak years of my local team.
RIP Lei. At least, he was able to enjoy his granddaughter for a bit.

I remember him as footballer. It was the fact that he was Kim's father that made me keep an eye on Kim. I wish the family strength in this time.
