Default The 2009 Futures Player of the Year [Winner: David Guez]

The 2009 Futures Player of the Year

Welcome!

The 2009 Futures Tour has come to an end, and it is time to elect the season's best Futures player. This year saw XX tournaments being held (### to ###in 2008) with ## unique tournament winners in singles. Additionally, these winners came from ## different countries and from 6 different continents. In short, many players enjoyed at least some success, and this means that there are plenty of players to choose from in this year-end competition.

Previous Winners:

Code:
2008: No poll (only nominations)
2007: Predrag Rusevski (Macedonia)

threads:
2008: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=135045
2007: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=114367

It was also a turbulent year in which several players who started the year in Futures rose to the Challenger level or even ATP level, while some players formerly performing almost solely at Challenger level or ATP-level could not avoid sliding down the ladder and had to start playing Futures, with mixed success (e.g. TBA).

While some of these players rose mostly due to successes in events other than Futures, in this poll you are asked to focus on Futures results only. In particular, when voting, you are asked to keep the following questions in mind:
  • Who has won the most titles?
  • Who has won the strongest tournaments?
  • Who has the better win/loss record?
  • Who was the best all-court player, racking up successes on all surfaces?
  • Whose game has proven to be the most consistent?
  • Who excelled in both singles and doubles?
In any case, please do not be led by nationalism or fanaticism.

The contestants:
All contestants will be properly introduced in posts #2 - #11.

Have fun voting!

Your Moderators,

Edu [Zirconek]
Tijn [CooCooCachoo]

Started the year ranked as #352 and finished as #224 (+128)

2009 Highlights:

Titles: Chile F5 (Clay), Chile F4 (Clay), Chile F1 (Clay), Brazil F17 (Clay), Brazil F16 (Clay), Argentina F7 (Clay)
SF: Chile F2 (Clay), Argentina F8 (Clay)

Like David Guez, has just reached his carrer high again (was in same position in July 2006) and had a good end of season, winning several titles at home and reaching the final of Lima Challenger (but hey, this is about Futures).

Adrian Menendez (ESP)

Started the year ranked as #246 and finished as #244 (+2 only)

2009 Highlights:

Titles: Spain F34 (Hard), Germany F12 (Clay), France F12 (Clay), Spain F17 (Clay), Spain F7 (Clay)
SF: Spain F37 (Clay), Spain F21 (Carpet)

Even though Menendez moved up only 2 spots at the end of the season, we should consider his ranking was already high for futures level. If he was awful in the Challengers he played last season, winning a match in main draw only in the last tournament of the year, he did quite good in futures, winning in different surfaces and different countries (which suggests facing a large spectrum of opponents).

This young player from India, born in 1992, played tournaments in both pro and junior tours and managed to make a big jump in the ranking by winning several events in his home soil.

Juan-Pablo Amado (ARG)

Started the year ranked as #266 and finished as #276 (-10)

2009 Highlights:

Titles: Brazil F26 (Clay), Brazil F23 (Hard), Brazil F21 (Clay), Bolivia F4 (Clay), Brazil F15 (Clay)
Runner-Up: Brazil F24 (Clay), Argentina F2 (Clay)
SF: Brazil F22 (Clay), Argentina F14 (Clay)

The Argie player is another one who tried to play Challengers and wasn't successfull at this level, and then went back to futures to collect points and prize money with a lot of success then, will he manage to get out of this limbo in 2010?

Default Re: The 2009 Futures Player of the Year

Many others players could have make the list.

When it comes to number of titles, that was the way selected to pick the players, two with 5 titles were left out:
Nikola Metkic (CRO) - won futures on clay in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina
Karim Maamoun (EGY) - won futures at home, on clay.

The list of players with 4 titles is the following:
4. Ager, Johannes AUT
4. Balazs, Attila HUN
4. Bonatto, Alexandre BRA
4. Clar-Rossello, Pedro ESP
4. D'Agord, Luigi ITA
4. Gonzalez, Alejandro COL
4. Ignatik, Uladzimir BLR
4. Kellner, Adam HUN
4. Lacko, Lukas SVK
4. Mertens, Yannick BEL
4. Okun, Noam ISR
4. Pella, Guido ARG
4. Pospisil, Vasek CAN
4. Sadecky, Alexander SUI
4. Statham, Jose Rubin NZL
4. Tosic, Goran MNE

Lacko and Okum are maybe the players who actually made their way back to Challengers, while others are stuck in futures level or are up and coming players still making their way to the next level. Others players deserve mention, like Przysiezny from Poland (3 titles, similar to Lacko and Okum) and Abid from Tunisia (winning titles coming from qualies).

Default Re: The 2009 Futures Player of the Year

I've added 4 players already, I have others in mind (basically about number of titles won), you can suggest names in this thread.

I'll be travelling in the next days so I'm thinking about adding the poll in one week, when I'll be back home, but maybe Tijn can do it before.

You can check the 2009 Futures overview to have an idea about the best players of the Futures circuit in 2009.

I'd vote for Yuki Bhambri. He only played events in India, which are usually weak, but he won five titles, and this is a lot of titles for a junior player.

btw, will the 2009 Overview be updated? The last two tournaments in Brazil are still missed.

Thanks for all the work
