You can now vote online for the United States Sports Academy’s 2008 Athlete of the Year award. Votes will be collected until December 24, the winner will be announced on Christmas Day.

i think it will be hard for a tennis player to win this in an olympic year...but thats probably a good thing cause i think nadal would beat fed this year anyway. ill still vote though!

Honestly, I'm as big a Federer fan as any of you, but this is ridiculous. Roger won the award in 2006 and 2007, which was 100% deserved, but he DOES NOT deserve to win it in 2008. He wasn't even the best tennis player of 2008, so how could he be the athlete of 2008. If there's any justice in the world then the award goes to either Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps.

totally agree, hoping phelps gets it. eight gold medals. ridiculous.

Come on, be realistic, maybe it wasn't the best year in the most pure Roger Federer style(3-4 GS, the Olimpics, etc.) but he won an olimpic gold medal and for the fifth year consecutive the US Open.

yeah Arwyn 75 is right, honestly u guys!when someone's on top, he/she has a high-level confidance and also has people supporting and cheering, the news and everywhere u look its all about him/her (even if its just a few weeks on top...remember when Roger lost in wimbledon? all eyes were on Nadal and all of a sudden he became the best player of all time and JUST IN A BLINK OF AN EYE EVERYBODY FORGOT ALL ABOUT FEDERER'S MAGICAL YEARS ON TOP) so when ur tough oponent is down struggling, its much much easier for u to collect as many points/cups as possible, but when u'r having a descending year its difficult even to reach semis or finals, as we may all have seen Roger losing even in the first round. but in that darkest hours when NOBODY believes in u anymore and everybody is just standing there waiting to see u fall,ITS NOT EASY!!! believe me its NOT EASY to stand ur ground, put urself together and rise again!!
its not always about the "title" of losing or winning.sometimes u may lose a game but u walk out a WINNER.because how u fight back in definitely the most disappointing situations and from NONE u make something to defend, makes u a winner. like how incredibly Federer fought for his title in wimbledon and also in shanghai against Murray.

believe me he deserves it the most!!!
lets see,who deserves more???a healthy person who can walk, jump, run, anything.... or a paralysis who starts to walk when all doctors have disappointed him that he'd ever be able to even move any of his body parts or that woman who overcame her cancer when there was no hope that she would ever gonna survive this! those are MIRACLES that we must pay attention and really SEE! the ones who can change the IMPOSSIBLE and make it POSSIBLE.though they might have a little to show but with that little amount, they teach us soooooooooo many thing! thats PRECIOUS!!!thats GOLD!!!
people arn't there for u all the time,and they leave u when u really need them. then there u are standing alone and no one there to help u and there, the only one that can always be there for u is U URSELF!with ur own will u can stand up and renovate everything...

Roger had a good year at the GS tournaments even if it wasn't quite the exceptional like 2004-2007 and to finally win an Olympic gold metal must have meant a lot to him but it's pretty hard to make a realistic case that Roger was the best tennis player of 2008 as Nadal had two slams and won the singles gold at the Olympics. And to me it's practically impossible to state that Roger was the best athlete of 2008 when you have athletes like Phelps winning 8 Olympic metals and Bolt winning three Olympic gold metals while breaking three world records. So as much as I like Roger I couldn't vote for him as athlete of 2008

Female Athlete Of The Year:
1. Nastia Liukin (gymnastics)
2. Guo Jinjing (diving)
3. Serena Wiliams (tennis)

i really wanted Federer to win the first spot, but hey he won the SECOND PLACE!!!!

and there's NO NADAL on Top 3!!

this shows that he's NOT DONE yet and many people still believes in him. thanx for anyone who voted him.
i still dont know the result counts, as soon as i find out the distance between each player, i'd let u guys know!

Wait, is this US athlete of the year? If they based it on the US Open result then it made sense.
