Re: Federico Luzzi is dead
Terrible, terrible news. My thoughts are with his family, friends, everyone who knew him on Tour, and the whole tennis community, left to mourn the death of such a young man so suddenly. Rest in peace, Federico.

Thanks for the details. How horrible, words can't even describe.

Almost the same thing happened to my grandfather many years ago. My gramma took him to the hospital for a bad cough and he went into some kind of coma state, and never came back. For him it was a blood infection probably that he'd had for months due to some medical malpractice, and yes I can honestly say that for some reason when it's such a surprise and comes out of nowhere it is much more painful, so my heart goes out to all of Luzzi's friends and family... when it happens like this it's almost surreal and impossible to comprehend But as someone said at least he didn't have a long painful period of suffering, because that is horrible too. At least he is in a good place now But so young
not sure if it was posted here, but this is the ATP's official statement http://www.atptennis.com/1/en/2008ne...ericoluzzi.asp

Re: Federico Luzzi is dead
Terrible news my condolences to the family and friends of Luzzi - it's more difficult when tragedy comes out of the blue like this, you haven't had time to steel yourselves against the inevitable.

Re: Federico Luzzi is dead
Such a tragedy.
'Fulminant' just means 'happens extremely quickly and causes death quickly'.
Luzzi probably died of an infection, possibly to a lung infection as doctors initially thought it was just bronchitis. Leukaemia destroys the immune system, and sufferers can easily catch an infection. Of course, any infection is potentially lethal with a non-existent immune system.

Yep... that seems likely to me too.
Terrible, terrible, especially at such a young age... but it happens, alas.
