It was a poor display of tennis from David (bad match overall from both players), but on the other hand, it really did look like he was trying to make something happen from about 5-4 in the first set onwards, but he just wasn't playing well enough to execute it. As a spectacle, the match was not very nice to watch at all, with the first set dragging on for ages. His backhand was especially disappointing not showing a lot of feel on that side.

It looked like he might have hurt himself for a couple of games there early in the first set, but fortunately he looked fine from the second half of the first set onwards which was when the pace of his serve started to pick up as well. In the early part of the match, not only were there a lot of errors from David, but the depth on his shots in the beginning looked really poor as well. Thankfully that got better late in the first set. He started to dictate play a lot more in the second set although was still a bit inconsistent. Kiefer showed some good tactics but his execution was very poor, he hit a couple of outstanding drop volleys though.

He has to lift his game for a couple of notches if he wants to win tomorrow. Slices bounces too high on this surface, angles are very reachable, only advantage he might have is a net play and he was atrocious in that department today.

It really was a poor match from both. I was also surprised to see that David apparently didn't do too much tactical homework about Kiefer. Kept serving to his backhand in the first set, which is Kiefer's strength anyway, plus he returns very well off that wing. Later on though, David changed it. He also didn't give Kiefer as many chances to come to the net as in the beginning.

But if tomorrow he plays and especially serves anywhere near what we've seen from him today, then...

Yes, I was annoyed that he kept serving to Kiefer's backhand as well. His crosscourt backhand return in particular is very strong.

I also didn't like all of those slice backhands in the first set TB.
