My backhand is bad now. Last November it was awesome, it sounded like a canon and it felt really smooth and whip-like and know I can only get a little bit of that feeling when I hit it well. I always seem to hit the ball late and too close to my body and I have problems dealing with high backhands.

My forehand is on and off. Sometimes I hit it pretty well. Right now I can attack with it well and when it goes in, it's really hard and although I don't put a lot of topspin on it, it feels like a heavy ball if you know what I mean. My volleys are pretty bad now too, but that's only because I haven't practiced them in like a month.

I don't know what's good actually, probably my forehand. Shots that I never have in my arsenal are an actually effective or even passable kick serve, volleys. I'm actually bad at high volleys, I always panic because I never practice finishing shots or anything. Sometimes I can pull off low volleys.

The reason people are not good at overheads is that there is a thought of fear that they might miss it in their mind,.

Happy Birthday, Nina!!

Sorry to hear about all of the troubles you're having with your game. Obviously I've never seen you play but it sounds to me like you're playing a bit too nervously and you just need to relax a little. I know from experience if you're too tense you mis-time shots a lot more and unless you can relax those shoulders then forget about serving with any pace, it's impossible.

Overhead, FH.

My overhead is a joke, and like NinaNina wrote, everyrime I get a lob, even an easy, it's gonna be a bad joke.
My FH sucks. sometimes it can be quite good, but usually it's so on and off, it's not a weapon and not gonna be, becuase my swing is pretty big.

My BH is my weapon, especially ther CC one. My volley is decent and my serve is improving

That´s partly true, but that shot also requires a lot of timing and estimating the ball. For players who don´t play that much (like me, nowadays) it might be difficult to get it right. It´s one of my worst shots.

As for the original question, sometimes I feel like the only shot I do have in my arsenal is the slice backhand. Everything else is consistently inconsistent.

i have a theory for the reason to this as well.

When do you practice lobbing???

thats right. only when you're feeding people overheads.

so where is the ball going to end up when you try a defensive lob?

thats right, in the perfect spot for a warm up overhead.

about three or four feet past the net.

game over.

My backhand (topspin and slice) has gone missing over the past 2 weeks and I have a match in 22 hours.. any miracle workers around??

Back when I used a double-handed backhand I could never master the topspin. However when trying to hit topspin cross-court it almost always produced a great angle, but I usually used to hit the backhand like Roddick, then more recently with a one-hander like Federer (nowhere near as good obviously).. now I can't hit it at all. It's a pretty big thing to have missing from your arsenal when heading into your first ever match in the club championships.. maybe the guy will get injured and I'll win anyway

About lobs, I can of course do slice lobs, but they rarely work and I can't do topspin lobs. Not at all.

About the backhand, from a single-hander amateur point of view, topspin is pretty hard to use. Try bending more your knees and starting the swing with the racket closer to the ground. Can't guarantee anything, though, as my backhand has very little topspin.

Bingo.

I've got two ways that I counteract that...both compliments of an older, wiser partner who has taken me under his wing.

First, although a bit slimy, I'll occasionally hit a lob over the person's head during warmup...if I haven't made an effort to hit some during the groundstroke portion of the warmup. Of course, I'll make the appropriate apologies but I do it for two reasons: (1) to get in a "real" lob and (2) to see my opponent's reaction...do they move back well or just let it go.

Second, during a practice session, I always close out with 5-10 minutes of overheads/lobs...alternating between feeding and receiving both. Man, lemme tell ya...that's the longest 10 minutes of practice!

And I suppose, like with any stroke, if you don't use it...you'll never feel comfortable with it.

I'll admit I have the advantage of playing mostly....shorter...women. I struggle to hit a decent lob over men in mixed.

Good tips.

You need really good touch to hit a good lob. At the weekend I couldn't seem to get the ball over anyones head in the doubles match I played, and that's the most frustrating feeling in the world. At least if I miss a lob, I'd rather miss it long and then at least you don't give the opponent a confidence boost of bouncing a smash over your head.

Usually my lobs are pretty good though. I don't really have a topspin forehand lob in my arsenal, I nearly always mistime it and it falls short. It's all in the muscle memory I suppose, and I just simply don't practice the shot.

Lobs are moonballs, aren't they? You shouldn't do it even if you can

THE shot i lack is an accurate kicked second serve.

I also have great passing shots, so I don't try lobs usually.

First time I played doubles in my life, when I paired with my coach against another coach and his student (who was a little more consistent than me) we won the first set 6/0 basically because my return was killing both the coach and the student. I have a knack for that low forehand with just enough spin to fall right after it goes over the net, but still with a lot of speed.

I've just started reading Brad Gilbert's book, it's sneaky little tactics like these that he loves and recommends
