Default Devin Britton

I think it's about time this 17 year-old from Brandon, Mississippi got his own page. He just reached the semifinals of the USO junior tournament after having to go through qualifying. He has beaten three seeded players along the way, including Bernard Tomic, the Australian phenom who won the Australian Open junior tournament and seeded second here.

Britton is 6'4" and I believe he does a lot of serve and volleying . He hasn't had a particularly remarkable junior career before now, so this is really great to see. He plays Krajinovic today. Good luck Devin!

Default Re: Devin Britton

According to Colette Lewis at zootennis.com, Britton defeated Krajinovic 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. If true, it would be the second time he's beaten Krajinovic since late June. This match, by the way, was played at a nearby indoor court because of the rain.

It sounds like Colette is relying on others to relay the score, so I'm going to wait to see confirmation before getting too excited, but if it's accurate, what an amazing run by Britton. As Chip said, he has not had a particularly impressive junior career. In fact, he almost didn't get into the qualifying draw. His win over Tomic was a monumental upset. His second round opponent, Matthew Kandath, beat him in straight sets last week. His third round opponent, 13th seeded Bradley Klahn, has been far and away the better player up until now. His quarterfinal opponent, 11th seeded Cedric-Marcel Stebe, is also much more accomplished. His semfinal opponent, Filip Krajinovic, is considered one of the premier talents in junior tennis, though, as I said, Britton did beat him a couple months ago. Honestly, few would have predicted him to beat any of these players (except MAYBE Kandath) before the tournament. If he won today and wins again tomorrow, he will be one of the most improbable junior Grand Slam winners in history.

I say long live serve-and-volley tennis!

According to usopen.org, it's Britton vs. Grigor Dimitrov in the final. Dimitrov is going for his second straight Grand Slam title, having won Wimbledon. Britton is obviously a big underdog.

Here's an article about today's matches:

http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/art...735425977.html

Here's the part relevant to Britton:

Devin Britton became the unlikeliest finalist in the tournament’s 36-year history as he came back to beat unseeded Serbian Filip Krajinovic, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, in a semifinal match played indoors 30 minutes from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at the Sound Shore Indoor Tennis Club in Port Chester, N.Y., because of rain.

Britton called his first set on Saturday “scary” as Krajinovic came out firing. “He was hitting all the lines by two inches,” Britton said. “He didn’t miss a shot the entire set.”

But Britton settled down and opened the second set with an important break as both players held the rest of the set. Britton once again broke to open the third set eventually taking a commanding 5-0 lead. He was then broken at love serving for the match. “Got a little nervous there,” he said. “Didn’t hit one first serve or make any shots that game.”

Krajinovic held his serve before Britton ended it with an emphatic ace giving him a trip to the US Open final.

What makes Britton’s finals run at the Open even more remarkable is the fact that he still has another year left in the juniors. Britton, a 17-year-old IMG Bollettieri Academy player from Jackson, Miss., has yet to make a decision about his future. “If it was Devin’s decision he would have already turned pro,” said Britton’s mother, Cindy. “We just can’t continue with all this travel financially. We’re not sure yet what we’re going to do.”

It depends on whether you count Ryan Sweeting, who at the time represented the Bahamas. He won in 2005. Roddick beat Ginepri in 2000. The last American before them was Brian Dunn, who won in 1992.

You got me to wondering about finals appearances in the other slams. Here is a list of American finalists in each Grand Slam dating back to 1995:

Australian Open

2005: Donald Young (winner over Sun-Yong Kim)
2000: Andy Roddick (winner over Mario Ancic)

French Open

2004: Alex Kuznetsov (runner-up to Gael Monfils)
2003: Brian Baker (runner-up to Stanislas Wawrinka)

Wimbledon

2007: Donald Young (winner over Uladzimir Ignatic)

U.S. Open

2008: Devin Britton
2005: Ryan Sweeting* (winner over Jeremy Chardy)
2000: Andy Roddick (winner) and Robby Ginepri (runner-up)

*Sweeting represented the Bahamas at the time.

Britton and Dimitrov play tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. eastern.

Dimitrov, by the way, seems to be regarded by many as the most talented junior in the world and a strong bet to be a good pro. His results are very encouraging to say the least. If Britton wins, it will be some upset.

Here are some highlights of the Wimbledon final between Dimitrov and Henri Kontinen:

Thanks for that! how funny that we've had similar success at RG as the other slams, but it hasn't translated to the pro level. Shame really.

Hopefully this kid will just go out and try his best tomorrow and win or lose he should take some good things from the tournament

Colette Lewis has a story up on Britton's match (with some more quotes).

http://tenniskalamazoo.blogspot.com/

She mentions that Britton and Dimitrov last met in the 16s finals at the 2006 Eddie Herr (a fairly big junior tournament in late November for those who don't follow juniors closely). Dimitrov won that match 6-2, 6-1. Let's hope there's not a repeat of that.

I haven't heard of there being any TV coverage of the final, but last year The Tennis Channnel showed it. It doesn't look like it's going to be aired tomorrow, but maybe they will show it at some point. Keep an eye out for that. Maybe we'll get lucky and USA/CBS will show portions of it.

Britton lost 4-6, 3-6.

The first set was on serve until Dimitrov broke Britton at 4-5 to take the set. Britton broke Dimitrov at 1-1, but Dimitrov immediately broke back to level the match at 2-2, held, and then broke again at 2-3. They both held serve from there.

Awesome tournament by Britton. He just ran into a guy who is now indisputably the best junior in the world.

Britton is entered in another tournament this week, but I would expect him to withdraw.

BTW, Britton has decided to enroll at Ole Miss in January.

Britton is off to a great start at Ole Miss. He has advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Indoor Championships in his very first collegiate tournament. The SEC is arguably the best conference in the country, so it's an impressive start. Tomorrow he will play John-Patrick Smith, the NCAA singles runner-up. If he wins that, he'll also play the finals tomorrow.

He lost in the third round in doubles.
