I just saw Go Soeda won his QF in Pingguo. I believe this means he is in Top-100 now, first time in his career

Great achievement fo Go Soeda, he appears to work very hard.
It's also very good for Japan to have 2 top 100 ATP players now.

More and more items have been donated to Kei's charity auction.
Now it's 6 pages long and include items given by Kei, Rafa, Fed, Soderling, Murray, Gasquet, Wawrinka, Querrey, Karlovic, Berankis, Dimitrov, Harrison, Marach, McEnroe, Morita, Zvonareva, Jankovic, Sharapova etc. etc.

http://www.aceauthentic.com/keinishikori/main/index.php

The link I posted yesterday somehow is not working, so click the above link and then go to "Bid Now." And you can see the items on the auction.

Kei has added one hour's hit with him to the charity auction. There's one bid so far and it costs $350.
It's on Page 7.

Kei is on the front cover of popular general magazine AERA this week.
Don't know when the pic was taken (I guess it was taken in December) but Kei's looking like a snooker player.

http://www.aera-net.jp/

People featured on the cover of this magazine include all kinds of celebrities, from politicians to visiting rock stars. The magazine is published by a big newspaper company and separates itself from many other weekly magazines that just thrive on sensationalism and picture of naked women by trying to look sophisticated and intellectual-orientated (not without fail. lol). It's available at every station Kiosk and major booksellers.

But I don't know if it was the right timing for Kei to be featured on their cover partly because most of the articles are obviously about the earthquake and the nuclear debacles---all very sad and gloomy stories---and also partly because the magazine had to apologise a couple of weeks ago after carrying a picture of a man wearing a gas mask on its front cover the week after the quake. That cover photo proved very unpopular with the public who said it was too scaremongering.

-----------------
Whoever on the cover gets a mini interview in the magazine, and there were some interesting quotes from Kei although it is heavily edited I don't know in what context or to what kind of questions he made those comments. (As usual, following translations by me are arbitrary and therefore by no means official!)

"I thought I would be a pro from when I was 11 or 12."

"The past year I had many ups and downs in my form, but my coach firmly followed me up. I'm pretty stubborn and selfish so I think it's not easy to handle me."
[I guess he's talking about Glenn here because he made similar remarks in another interview from December.]

His favourite saying is: "Some sufferings you can solve by worrying, but others you can't."

He started tennis following his father's advice, and it was also his father who decided he should go abroad [I think there's some misunderstanding on the journalist's part although maybe it was his dad who made the final decision to accept the Morita fund to go to US.]
Asked whethere he had any inner friction about always following his father's advice (), he said: "It was like the road opened up naturally."

When he was living in a dorm in US, his roommates drank his juice and used his towels without his permission, but he wasn't that bothered, thinking "That's how America is."
"Maybe I'm someone who don't care much about many things."

Kei's Cause: Auction raises money for Red Cross
By Ed McGrogan - Monday, April 18, 2011

Tennis players are known for their quick reactions, and so it was fitting that many of them responded to the recent disasters in Haiti and New Zealand—with the impromptu “Hit for Haiti” and “Rally for Relief” fundraisers—in such short order.

It came as little surprise, then, that soon after an earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan this March, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and other soccer-savvy players arranged a benefit match with the North American Soccer League’s Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The game and a dinner raised $100,000, and Djokovic has said that additional matches are being planned.

Those games won’t be the only tennis-related aid efforts taking place during the next few months. Japanese No. 1 Kei Nishikori has been spearheading an online auction—chock full of tennis goodies donated from fellow pros and memorabilia specialist Ace Authentic—with proceeds going to the Red Cross. “We just kept thinking about something that we could do,” Nishikori said. “We set up the partnership with the Red Cross right away and brought in a significant amount. But I wanted to do more and that is how the idea of the auction came about.”

The auction, located at www.tennisaceauctions.com, offers a wide spectrum of tennis-themed items. A signed Ayumi Morita postcard ended at $25, while a match-used Nadal shirt from this year’s Australian Open is currently at $8,750—with a few days left on the block. Other unique items include the Japanese flag Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka brought out to court at Indian Wells (signed by both), a one-hour tennis lesson with Brad Gilbert and a life-size promotional poster of Roger Federer, autographed by the 16-time Grand Slam champ. “I believe by now all the Top 10 players have now donated items, which is very cool,” Nishikori said. “I am very thankful for all their help.”

Also up for bidding are non-tennis items, including a cruise vacation, a wine-tasting trip and shopping sprees. For those on a smaller budget, signed memorabilia from Joe Montana, Anthony Kim and many other athletes are currently available for under $100. “We’re going to constantly be getting additional items and experiences all the way through Wimbledon,” says John Reichel of Ace Authentic. “We start the pricing off a lot lower than what the value is; we just want to raise money.”

So far, the auction has done just that. Reichel couldn’t give an estimate on how much money has already been raised, but acknowledged that “the items donated from the players and companies have been great.” And there may be additional fundraising ventures on the way. “We continue to think about ideas,” Nishikori said. “The Japan Open is at the end of the year and we will obviously think of things around that event. For now, we would like to keep raising money through the auction site.”

It remains to be seen what ideas become reality, but we know one thing for sure: Someone—in all likelihood a big Nishikori fan—will be trading forehands and backhands with the Japanese star in Tokyo. Another hitting session with Nishikori, in Bradenton, Fla., was put up for auction on March 31, but Florida is quite a distance for someone from Japan to cover in order to hit with their hero. “Then we got a request from a customer who said, ‘Why don’t you do one in Japan?’,” Reichel said. “So we went back to Kei and he said, ‘Yeah, I’ll do one at the Japan Open.’”

A week later, another item was created, helping out more than just one person.

---------------------------------
I'm just hoping Japan Open will be held this year...
