Hi Bunny, have Kei already used up his five tournaments with his protected ranking?
Any chance he can use that ranking for RG in May?

Hi Chewy,
Kei has already entered RG using PR, the entry deadline is six weeks before the tournament. He's #9 on the alternate list so he may have to play qualies (See the entry list I posted on the previous page).

I think he can use PR up to six times, but I could be wrong.
So far he has used it three times: Delray Beach, Baton Rouge and Tallahassee.
I think he will use another in Savannah, but he will probably receive WC in Sarasota (his name is not on the entry list but he's said he'd play there). I'm assuming he will use PR again at Wimbledon.
Shame he couldn't use the WC he received at Delray...there were many withdrawals from the main draw and his turn on the alternate list came up, so he had to give up the WC.

Chewy, it seems we were both wrong.
This is what the rulebook says about ranking protection:

Quote:
If a player is physically injured and does not compete in any tennis event for a period of at least six (6) months but less than twelve (12) months, the entry protection shall be in effect for either the first nine (9) tournaments that the player competes in using the entry protection (excluding wild cards and entries as a direct acceptance with his current position in the ATP Ranking) or for the period up to nine (9) months beginning with the first tennis event, including Special Events – Exhibitions, that the player competes in, whichever occurs first.
So in Kei's case, he played Delray Beach with PR, so that was his first tournament back he played using the PR. He has since played two challengers and entered two more tournaments (Savannah and RG) using the PR, so he can still enter four more tournaments with the PR.

Hey thanks for your explanation Bunny, you're much more aware of Kei's activities and the ATP rules then I am.

You also answered another question I had in mind but never asked.
I wondered before if Kei was offered a WC when he played Delray earlier this year..mystery solved

Default Re: Kei's news thread

Kei's probable schedule in the next weeks is:

May 3- Savannah challenger (Georgia, US, clay):
May 10- Sarasota challenger (Florida, US, clay):
May 18 (No RG qualies)
May 23- Roland Garros MD? Carson?

June 7- Queens? (He received WC last year but couldn't use it.)
Then - Wimbledon qualies? MD?

Yes he said in the past he likes clay, but in a recent blog he wrote that playing on clay is harder for the arm, so he seems to be a little concerned. Hope he will do OK!

Kei did not enter RG qualifying.
He's alternate #9 for MD. According to his agent Oliver, he has asked for MD WC too, although I doubt he has a good chance...

He is also alternate #6 for Queens.
Maybe he will get WC there?

Kei's name is on the entry list for the Carson challenger, which runs at the same time as the first week of RG.
I guess he will play Carson if he didn't get in MD since he didn't enter RG qualies. But I wonder at what point they will decide to fly to France? Or, since he's #9 on the alternate list, are they rather planning to stay in US? We should never wish injuries to other players, but there may be quite a few withdrawals from RG this year, so he may have a good chance to make it into MD even as alt. #9...

Kei is also alt. #6 at Queens.

Japanese broadcaster WOWOW, which airs all four grand slams, is running ads about upcoming Roland Garros in several versions, featuring short interviews of Kimiko Date-Krumm, the retired Ai Sugiyama, as well as Kei, who talk about their expectations/experiences at the French Open.
Kei is shown in the ad as if he's already a cert for RG, he says things like that he likes the event and wants to do well there. I wonder whether this is a strategy by the broadcaster, which is a paid channel, to attract more subscribers (the ads are broadcast during their free hours), or whether the Kei camp is quite certain he will receive WC or can get into main draw due to many withdrawals.

well right now tommy robredo, gilles simon, juan martin del potro, tommy haas, novak djokovic, radek stepanek, james blake, fernando gonzalez, and janko tipsarevic could all pull out so if they do he would get in.

i'd add davydenko to but it looks like he's going to be okay to play as he's supposed to be back in nice.

I'm pretty sure Tursunov won't play either, and maybe Vliegen and Ancic; Schwank is a doubt as well. But I think Robredo, Simon, Djokovic, Gonzo and Tipsy will try to be fit until the last minute.
We shouldn't really count on other players' misfortune, but it seems there are more injured/sick players this year than the same time in other years...

oh i know, i like alot of those players to so it would suck for me if they couldnt play and its a bad way for anyone to get into a tournament.

all in all there are 13 players who are questionable about playing in roland garros and of those 3 are definate( tommy haas, juan martin del potro and radek stepanek) and if simon is not an ediot he'll pull out to.

Yep I like many of these players as well. Thirteen...that's a lot.
My No. 1 favourite guy, JCF, has a knee problem as well and pulled out of Madrid (but he may play Nice so I think/hope it's not very serious). So, while part of me is very happy for Kei, another other part of me is very sad right now!
