Sorry Rafkei, for being slow in replying.

I have a bad news today.

Moya, Nishikori pull out of U.S. Open with injuries

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP)—The U.S. Tennis Association says former No. 1 Carlos Moya of Spain is pulling out of the U.S. Open because of a foot injury.

The 1998 French Open champion has been sidelined most of this season; his ranking recently slipped out of the top 100. Kei Nishikori of Japan was atop the alternates list for the year’s last Grand Slam tournament, but he withdrew due to an injury, too.

The two departures mean that 106th-ranked Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador moves into the tournament’s main draw.

The U.S. Open begins Aug. 31.

-----------------------------------
There have been speculatoins among tennis fans in Japan that Kei might not be able to play USO because, although there has been reports of him training hard, none of them said he resumed practice with a racket.

It seems he still has pain in his elbow and he's determined not to start playing tennis until the pain is completely gone, which I think is a good decision because so many players don't take enough time to recover from an injury and end up making it chronicle.
Sure it's taking longer than expected and his ranking will be hit if he doesn't defend his points from USO.
But I'm sure once he becomes fit and rejoins the tour again he will be able to play good tennis again and the ranking will take care of itself. Also, he will be able to use a protected ranking if he doesn't play until mid-September.

Let's hope he will get better soon!

Hi Bunny! Thanks for that

I was afraid you'll deliver that news, kinda expecting it actually.

Lets just wait until Kei's injury is 100% gone. I am sure we are all disappointed about this, but Kei is definitely x2 disappointed as well.

Will just have to be patient and wait for the right time.

Goodluck Kei!

I would like to share a press release by IMG:

Update Regarding Elbow Injury Kei Nishikori

BRADENTON, Florida, August 11, 2009 – After withdrawing from the French Open in May, IMG client Kei Nishikori and his team visited Dr. Altchek, one of the leading arm specialists in the world, who diagnosed him with a minor stress fracture in his elbow that required extensive rest and therapy.

The pain in the elbow, however, continued to exist. As a result, Dr. Altchek and Dr. Saito from the Nihon University Hospital in Tokyo, who is Kei’s doctor in Japan, decided the best option for Kei was to undergo a small microscopic surgery to remove a minor bone spur. Dr. Saito performed the procedure in Tokyo last week, and Kei is expected to be back on the court and start practice in about 4-6 weeks.

Kei will continue his rehabilitation process under the guidance of Dr. Saito and his team in Tokyo, and return to the IMG/Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida once he is ready to start hitting tennis balls. In Florida, Kei will continue his rehab at Bollettieri Sports Medicine.

Kei will not participate in the upcoming US Open at the end of this month. IMG is currently finalizing Kei’s protected ranking with the ATP, which will enable Kei to participate in most of the big tournaments in the first half of 2010.

According to news sources here Kei is set to miss the rest of the season because he still needs to work on rehab on his elbow... He will make an announcement on his conditions and come back plan soon.

Since the points from US Open last year dropped off the computer last week, his ranking has plummeted to 170s. But he will be able to use protected ranking by the time he returns, which I think will be around 100.

In a recent interview on his official site that he said that he is dying to play tennis and at the same time he's worried whether he can play at the same level again when he actually returns. He trains and rehabs almost all day everyday, particularly on his body trunk because he was told part of the reasons for the injury was that he was relying too much on his elbow because his body was not strong enough.

I really miss seeing him play tennis, and I hope this long break from the sports will be a blessing in disguise and he will be able to come back stronger, physically as well as mentally...!

It's Japan Open this week, and after the first match on Centre Court tomorrow, Tuesday October 6, there will be a presentation ceremony of the 2008 ATP Newcomer's Award for Kei.
I will be there so will report it here because I think he will say something to the fans!
Apparently, he was cheering for the doubles match by Kondo and Soeda today.

Last week, he was in the stand for the first round match by Ai Sugiyama, which turned out to be her last singles match, at Toray Panpacific Open, which took place at the same venue as Japan Open.

Sorry for the long silence!
I still haven't had time and energy to sort out my pics from Japan Open, let alone from US Open (which I went for the first time this year!)

Kinokino, thanx for the photos, they look great!

Anyway, Kei started twitter (in English):
http://twitter.com/keinishikori

And his Facebook here (in Japanese but it's mostly video clips and pix.):
http://www.facebook.com/keinishikori?_fb_noscript=1

Since he's lost all the points he earned last year, his ranking has plunged to below 400. But he secured a protected ranking of #106, so I guess he will be able to enter AO directly. Cut is #104, but there are ususally more than two players withdrawing for one reason or another.

In his blog he wrote he was going to start training with real tennis balls from this week. (Before that he was hitting with a soft, sponge ball.) He's yet to hit with his right hand, but hopefully he will be able to do so soon.
Glenn Weiner and others from his team will join him in Tokyo later this month before he returns to US in December.

I wish everything will go well with you, Kei!

Kei held a press conference in Tokyo today.

Here is summing up of what he said from news sources I've read (it's only rough translaions so please do not quote them elsewhere word by word!):

He no longer has any pain in his arm.
He started hitting regular tennis balls in early November. On the first day of the practice, he was able to hit only 10 balls.
He's been able to rally for two weeks now, but he can't serve yet.
He will return to US in mid-December.
He says he's recovered about 60-70% right now and it will probably take a month or two to be 100% again.
He may not be 100% by the time of AO, but he wants to play in Melbourne if he's 90% because he wants to get used to match practice.
But he knows playing five setters is very difficult when you're not 100%, so he can't make a solid schedule before returning 100 %.
He's trying to change his form so that he doesn't rely too much on his arms' power.
He thinks his shoulders are bigger now because of hard training.
Recently he received advice on his form from Fusako Sugiyama, the retired Ai Sugiyama's mother and coach.
Regarding his ranking, which is now in 400s, he said he wants to start again from zero and would be happy if he can imrpove it little by little.

English versions of the above story are coming in now.

Nishikori likely to miss Australian Open
(AFP) – 20 hours ago

TOKYO — Japan's teenage sensation Kei Nishikori said Friday he may miss the Australian Open in January, the first Grand Slam event of the season, although he has resumed training after an elbow injury.

"I can't make a schedule for the tour until my elbow is completely healed. I still need one or two months to be back to 100 percent," Nishikori told reporters.

"I want to take part (in the Australian Open) but probably I can't."

Nishikori, who will turn 20 next month, has been out of competition since injuring his right elbow in March and underwent surgery in August. He resumed training at the end of October.

"I think it's a start... Hopefully I can move up little by little," said Nishikori whose world ranking has plummeted to 423rd from his all-time high of 56th last February.

"I think my condition is about 70 percent now."

Nishikori was identified as a prodigy in his early teens.

A foundation established by Japan Tennis Association president Masaaki Morita sent him to Florida where he started training at the renowned Nick Bollettieri Academy at age 13.

In only his fifth tournament since his professional debut in 2007, Nishikori caused a sensation by capturing his first ATP title at Delray Beach in February last year at 18 to become only the second Japanese man to win a tour title.

Nishikori's US Open performance last year, where he reached the fourth round beating then world number four David Ferrer of Spain, put him in the world spotlight and earned him highly lucrative sponsorship contracts.

Nishikori eyes comeback early next year
TOKYO, Nov. 27 KYODO

Rising Japanese star Kei Nishikori is preparing to make his comeback to competitive tennis early next year after having surgery on his right elbow in August.

"My elbow has recovered 60 to 70 percent. I'm trying to come back in January or February," the ATP Newcomer of the Year said Friday at National Training Center in Tokyo.

Nishikori hurt his elbow at the season-opening Brisbane International and missed much of 2009, sending him to 423rd in the ATP rankings.

The 19-year-old began to hit the ball three weeks ago and is now swinging the racket without pain.

Nishikori is also working on mechanics with the help of Fusako Sugiyama, the mother of recently retired Ai Sugiyama, to avoid a recurrence of the elbow problem.

Asked if he could be fit in time for the Australian Open in January, Nishikori said, "I want to play, but I don't think I can unless I'm back at 100 percent."

He plans to return to his training base in Florida in mid-December.
