Quote:
Federer re-prioritises Davis Cup after Olympics
Roger Federer has hinted that if Switzerland beat Belgium in next month’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Playoff Round, he will commit to a full year of the team competition next year. Federer was speaking after winning the Olympic doubles gold medal with his Swiss team-mate Stanislas Wawrinka, a triumph he described as “totally different, quite unique”.

“I haven’t yet made up the plan exactly for next year,” said Federer when asked about committing to the competition, “but I think I’m definitely going to play the first round next year, and that hopefully will be in the World Group after beating Belgium in the relegation round.”

Contrary to some perceptions, Federer has never wanted to miss Davis Cup. He has always said he loves the Davis Cup weeks with his friends and team-mates, but because he has been so successful in singles he needs to plan his schedule very carefully to avoid injuries and burnout, and the Davis Cup early rounds have normally clashed with weeks he devotes to fitness work and his need to play a quieter schedule so he is fresh for the big tournaments in mid-year. But he has always said he would like to win the Davis Cup one day, and with Wawrinka now in the world’s top 10 in singles, this seems like Switzerland’s best chance since the Alpine nation reached its only final in 1992.

“I really grew up being a team player,” Federer added. “I always have been, I love team competition: basketball, soccer. It’s always something I’ve enjoyed doing. When I got my first Davis Cup nomination when I was 16, it was for me the greatest thing. When I play Davis Cup the atmosphere in the team is important. It’s really key, and we have that. That’s why Stan and I had such a good understanding of each other today on the court and throughout the whole week. It’s something we’ve been trying to build up for many years.”

Switzerland’s tie against Belgium in Lausanne is one of eight Playoff Round ties taking place 19-21 September, the same weekend as the two Davis Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals.

As expected. But I hoped to see O Rochus vs Federer. Vliegen should be replaced, Oliie is the only one who could have a chance against Fed

Judging from the second set, it's really hard to see how Wawrinka lost that first set.

Don't know what's happening to Steve First set he played a lot better and he looked a lot fitter aswell. I thought there was something wrong with his back again but he didn't call the fysio.

Well, if it goes to five sets, there is no way Darcis is winning. He looks like he has no energy whatsoever.

If he doesn't find some new energy there's no way he will win even another set. But we all know that Darcis can come back, it's not over yet.
And I'm afraid Kristof Vliegen isn't exactly the man who can give Federer a decent work-out right now
