Hanley is out injured, no real future with Kerr being an older guy never having been there before (like Alun Jones first appearance playing the dead rubber last year...now retired!)Junaid is not up to it. He is really only just on par with the younger guys. There team is the best available but unfortunately they all need a year or two!

Gooch and Groth are big guys who rely heavily on their serve, Ball serves and volleys (could be OK on clay) Klein and Smeets have more consistent ground strokes and will tee off winners. Looch is the only real claycourt grinder but relies heavily on being fully fit. It will be a great learning curve for them all...hope the crowd isn't too hostile!

Trouble here for australia... capital T...

Blooding a few new players is good though, even with Hewitt it still would have been some task... Aussies just gotta ride out these tough times and hope for 3 or 4 of the next batch to crack the top 100 soonish...

Why wasn't Sirianni selected? His game would have more chance on clay than Groth, Ball or Smeets.

Because he's a million years old and not in good form anyway, if he was playing decently like at the start of the year then maybe.

I don't know why they didn't pick a good doubles player like Kerr. Although bring in Smeets and team him with the Gooch and they are an ok team, made an ATP final.

artice in the age about luczak

AUSTRALIA'S new-look Davis Cup squad is enjoying its status as massive underdog for this weekend's tie against Chile, according to clay-court specialist Peter Luczak.

The finishing touches are still being applied to the clay court for the World Group play-off in the coastal mining town of Antofagasta, but Luczak says the Aussies are settling well.

The seven players in the squad are using the week of preparation to fight out the four spots on the team - minus recuperating mainstay Lleyton Hewitt - which will take on the likes of world No.9 Fernando Gonzalez and Athens Olympic gold medallist Nicholas Massu.

"We're Aussies, we love being battlers and it's a nice feeling playing with no expectation so there's no reason why we can't pull off an upset,'' said Luczak.

The former top-100 player is among the best credentialled members of captain John Fitzgerald's squad but he's seen his ranking slip to 178 in the last three and a half months off the tour after he was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis.

"The doctors I spoke to said they hadn't seen anything like it other than in a car accident victim, but nothing (like it) in an athlete,'' Luczak said. Endless hours of rehabilitation have him bidding for a return in the Cup tie.

Luczak has been named in the four man team but under Davis Cup rules two players can be changed in the line up as late as Thursday. His latest scan a fortnight ago was all good news and Luczak is now improving his form daily on the practice courts.

"It was tough but it was also nice at the same time to be able to spend some time with my family,'' said Luczak. "I was doing a lot of rehab and a lot of work on the bike, just trying to get back into it.''

With a 1-1 career record against Gonzalez, the Australian knows the Chilean hero can be beaten and is eager for the chance to prove it.

How come TA gave him their only wildcard to the French Open this year and he has had two Aussie open wildcards if he wasn't even an Australian then?

Robert Smeets is Dutch, speeks with a dutch accent, not strong but it's there. He has been able to compete under Australian Flag as he is a resident here, that said though, you can not represent the country at eg Olympics, Davis Cup (basically where it is countries competeing and not so much the individual..) if you do not hold a passport, you cannot hold a passport if you are not a citizen. So therefore Smeets has been able to compete on the tour as Australian but it was not until now that he could be considered for davis cup bc of his non citizen status.

Carsten ball however is Australian by birth since his father is Australian, but he has never really lived in Australia and speaks with the broadest american accent. they are all aussies, but to me smeets seems more aussie to me. Ball has played under US his whole life until AIS offered him their services. I am sure if USTA offered him those same services he would still be under US flag.

BUT good luck to them all, may the put Australia back in the World Group. It is a daunting task but not at all impossible!

A safe, conservative selection. A team that will draw the least amount of condemnation from the aussie media!
Not a team with a view to the future and a team with very little chance of winning!

We know what these two can and will do! So much for the youth policy and blooding new players! The four oldest players picked.
